MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Has there ever been a better Big 12 men's basketball tournament than the one we are about to watch this week in Kansas City?
Seven of the 10 teams in this year's Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship, taking place inside the T-Mobile Center's secure bubble in Kansas City, are likely going to be playing in this year's NCAA Tournament.
Yes, that means an NCAA Tournament-caliber team is playing the Wednesday night game when 25
th-ranked Oklahoma faces 10
th-seeded Iowa State in the nightcap.
Game one features TCU and Kansas State.
The four-game, Thursday session could be one of the most exciting and frenetic days in the history of Big 12 basketball.
Consider this, if Oklahoma gets past Iowa State, as expected, seven of the eight teams playing on Thursday will be ranked in this week's Associated Press Top 25. The day gets off to an incredible start with 10
th-ranked West Virginia taking on No. 12 Oklahoma State in a rematch of last Saturday's game at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia overcame a 19-point second-half deficit to stun the Cowboys in Stillwater in early January, while Oklahoma State exacted revenge by defeating West Virginia 85-80 two days ago.
The WVU-OSU game will tip off at 11:30 a.m. ET.
Game two pits second-ranked Baylor against either TCU or Kansas State at 2:30 p.m.
The second session on Thursday will get started at 6:30 p.m. with 11
th-ranked Kansas meeting the Oklahoma-Iowa State winner, followed by another barnburner in the nightcap when 13
th-ranked Texas plays No. 20 Texas Tech at 9:30 p.m.
The Friday session could feature all four teams ranked in the top 13 in this week's AP poll.
The only tournament comparable to the Big 12's is the Big Ten Tournament at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The Big Ten presently has five teams in this week's AP Top 25 and all of them could be in action on Friday if ninth-ranked Ohio State can get past the Minnesota-Northwestern winner.
No. 4 Michigan will play the winner of Michigan State-Maryland, No. 20 Purdue could meet No. 9 Ohio State, No. 3 Illinois will play the winner of Indiana-Rutgers and No. 5 Iowa will meet either Wisconsin, Nebraska or Penn State.
The only other Power conference with more than two ranked teams this week is the 15-member ACC with 15
th-ranked Florida State, 16
th-ranked Virginia and 22
nd-ranked Virginia Tech.
All three will be in action in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Thursday.
