West Virginia Cruises to Second-Straight Win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team scored four major decisions, one technical fall, and one pin on its way to a 36-3 victory over the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), inside Cormack Hall, on Sunday afternoon.
"We wrestled a little bit better," fourth-year coach Tim Flynn said. "They're (VMI) a young team, but we did what we're supposed to do, which is dominate."
Sophomore Colton Drousias dominated in the opening match at 125 pounds. Drousias scored the first two points of the dual to take a 2-0 lead early in the first period, and then added a four-point near fall to extend his lead to 6-0 heading into the second. He tacked on four more points to record an 11-0 shutout and his first major decision of the season.
Like Drousias, both redshirt sophomore Jeffrey Boyd and redshirt junior Alex Hornfeck earned back-to-back major decisions by a combined score of 27-5 to launch the Mountaineers toward an 18-0 advantage at the midway point of the meet.
To start the second half, No. 13/14 Peyton Hall delivered a 21-6 technical fall to put WVU up 23-0. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Carman added a 13-1 decision at 184 pounds, which No. 23/26 Michael Wolfgram pinned his opponent in 2:20 to push West Virginia to a 30-point victory.
Freshman Michael Dolan (133), senior Caleb Rea (141), and junior Scott Joll (174) combined for nine points off of three decisions. The win for Dolan is the second dual victory of his college career.
"We have a lot to work on if we want to win next week," coach Flynn concluded.
Next up, West Virginia welcomes Chattanooga and Cleveland State to Morgantown on Monday, Dec. 20, for the team's first tri-meet of the season. The event will begin with the two visiting schools battling it out at 10:30 a.m., followed by WVU squaring off against CU at noon and CSU at 1:30 p.m.
