WVU Battles Bowling Green in Senior Night Matchup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team caps the 2021 regular season by taking on Bowling Green on Thursday, Nov. 4, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Thursday's match is a Dollar Day, with tickets and select concessions available for just $1 each. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by visiting WVUGAME.com to avoid lines at the gate on game day. Of note, all tickets are general admission. Additionally, WVU students are admitted for free with a valid WVU Student ID.

Prior to the match, the Mountaineers will honor five senior student-athletes – midfielder Pau Jimenez Albelda, defenders Nicholas Manno and Kevin Morris, forward Yoran Popovic and goalkeeper Steven Tekesky – for their contributions on and off the pitch during their time at WVU as part of the team's Senior Night festivities.

Fans who are unable to attend the match can follow along with live stats at WVUsports.com. Additionally, the match can be seen live on ESPN+, with Nick Farrell and Adam Zundell on the call, as well as heard on 91.7-FM in Morgantown.

"They've been fantastic," WVU coach Dan Stratford said of this year's senior class. "They've been open to all the changes and have been leaders of that change that we've tried to bring to the program. I think they all understand what it means to represent this program, and ultimately, that's what is most important to me.

"The message is that this doesn't have to be Senior Night. This doesn't have to be the last game at Dick Dlesk. There are things we can do between now and the end of conference play to make sure we're here again in the NCAA Tournament."

Thursday marks the 17th overall meeting between the Mountaineers (10-2-4, 3-1-1 MAC) and Falcons (10-3-3, 2-1-2 MAC). BGSU leads the all-time series, 8-5-3, while the two teams are even at 2-2-1 in matches played in Morgantown.

WVU and Bowling Green met twice last season, with the Falcons earning a 1-0 win on March 17, in Morgantown, before a 0-0 draw in Bowling Green ended the 2020-21 regular season.

In all, West Virginia is 25-22-9 in MAC play since joining the league in 2012.

Last time out, WVU cruised to a 5-0 win over Georgia Southern on Oct. 31, in Statesboro, Georgia. Sophomore forward Ciro Bourlot Jaeggi scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 28th minute. He also found the back of the net in the 61st to help the Mountaineers' cause.

Redshirt junior midfielder/defender Dyon Dromers (41st), junior midfielder Luke McCormick (59th) and senior forward Tony Pineda (73rd) also scored for WVU in the win. In all, the Mountaineers outshot the Eagles, 22-7, and scored on five of their nine shots on goal.

The win secured WVU's 22nd 10-win season in program history.

On Nov. 1, Bourlot Jaeggi was named the MAC Player of the Week, marking the third different Mountaineer to earn the honor this season. The Santa Fe, Argentina, native has scored four goals in the last three matches, including the game-winner in all three of those contests. He leads WVU with six goals on the year.

In the polls, WVU checked in at No. 9 in this week's TopDrawerSoccer Top 25, as well as No. 17 by College Soccer News. Additionally, the squad once again received votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

Stratford is 77-9-10 as a head coach, including 16-5-5 with the Mountaineers. He also is 7-4-2 in MAC matches at WVU.

Of note, WVU is looking to secure its first unbeaten, regular-season campaign at home since 2006. The squad enters Thursday's tilt at 7-0-2 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium this fall.

Bowling Green is led by 13th-year coach Eric Nichols, who is 105-97-34 with the program. BGSU won the conference championship in 2020-21, earning the MAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

The Falcons are coming off a 1-1 draw against Western Michigan on Oct. 30, at home. Like WVU, the squad received votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll this week.

Nine players have scored multiple goals for Bowling Green this fall, led by Roberto Fernandez Garrido's six tallies. A total of six Falcons have registered 10 or more points in 2021.
