Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
Jarret Doege's three touchdown passes led West Virginia to a 31-23 victory over Texas here at Milan Puskar Stadium Saturday afternoon.
A Senior Day crowd of 48,755 watched the Mountaineers get a solid all-around performance in all three phases today. Doege completed 27 of his 43 pass attempts for 290 yards and senior running back
Leddie Brown ran 33 times for a season-high 158 yards and a touchdown in his final performance in Morgantown.
Doege's touchdown passes covered 20 yards to
Sam James on WVU's opening possession, 14 yards to
Winston Wright Jr. early in the second quarter and 7 yards to
Sean Ryan with 29 seconds left in the third quarter, giving West Virginia a 28-17 lead.
"It was a really good win for us," West Virginia coach
Neal Brown said. "It gets us to five wins and keeps us alive (for a bowl berth) for another week, and adds extra meaning when we travel to Lawrence next Saturday."
Texas, which announced it was leaving the Big 12 for the SEC this summer when the Big 12's television deal expires in 2025, is in the midst of its worst football season since 1956, a year before Darrell Royal took over the program.
Today's loss with the sixth straight for the Longhorns, who fired coach Tom Herman last season despite leading Texas to bowl appearances all four years he coached the Longhorns.
Today, Texas (4-7, 2-6) did not get a first down until 10:36 remaining in the second quarter and starting quarterback Casey Thompson was a dreadful 4 of 14 passing for 29 yards.
He led one touchdown drive in the second quarter – a 49-yard run by backup running back Keilan Robinson – before giving way to freshman Hudson Card at the beginning of the third quarter with the Longhorns trailing 21-10.
Card's second offensive possession ended up in the end zone when he completed a 52-yard touchdown pass down the far sideline to true freshman Xavier Worthy.
Card got the Longhorns back in the end zone at the beginning of the fourth quarter by leading an eight-play, 72-yard march that culminated with Roschon Johnson's 6-yard touchdown run.
Trailing 28-23, the Longhorns opted to go for the two-point conversion to make it a three-point game, but Card's conversion pass intended for Jordan Whittington was tipped at the line of scrimmage.
West Virginia (5-6, 3-4) began the game by traveling 75 yards in nine plays, most of it coming on Doege passes. The quarterback completed 6 of 7 throws on the opening drive for 72 yards as the Mountaineers have now scored points on eight of their 11 opening offensive possessions of the season.
Doege's passing was also responsible for the Mountaineers' second touchdown early in the second quarter. A 31-yard pass to
Bryce Ford-Wheaton down the far sideline on third and 7 put the ball at the Texas 47, and his 18-yard pass to
Isaiah Esdale on third and 10 got the ball to the Longhorn 16.
His touchdown pass to Wright running toward the back of the end zone came on a Texas blitz and was executed perfectly by the Mountaineers.
Following Robinson's 49-yard touchdown run, West Virginia answered immediately with a 12-play, 82-yard march that consumed 5:55 of the clock. Brown carried the ball seven times on the drive, including a third and 1 run for 2 yards to the Longhorn 38, and then a 2-yard touchdown run after
Kaden Prather's 19-yard reception to the ball to the Texas 7.
Cameron Dicker's 50-yard field goal with 1:13 left in the second quarter trimmed West Virginia's lead to 21-10, and Legg's answer from 48 yards away with three seconds left landed just outside the right goal post.
Legg did kick a 45-yarder with 7:03 left in the game to give West Virginia an eight-point lead following Johnson's touchdown run.
Senior
Sean Mahone came up with the game's only turnover when he intercepted Thompson's deep pass at the WVU 6 and returned it 28 yards to the 34. West Virginia got one first down and was able to run off all but 36 seconds before giving the ball over to the Longhorns on downs at the Texas 36.
Texas tried four passes, one of them by Thompson before he got injured, and three more by Card, who left the game with a lower body injury before being forced to return to the field to complete the game.
Card completed 10 of 16 passes for 123 yards for the Longhorns. Robinson ran nine times for 11 yards and Johnson added 77 yards on 15 attempts in place of injured starter Bijan Robinson.
After being targeted 23 times in last Saturday's loss to Kansas, freshman Xavier Worthy was targeted 12 times, and he caught seven for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Doege was fantastic throwing the ball on third down, completing 8 of 13 for 132 yards and the 20-yard touchdown pass to James.
In the third quarter, he completed a 19-yard pass to Wright Jr. on third and 18 and later hooked up with redshirt freshman
Reese Smith for 20 yards on third and 15.
"It was clean football for us today, and that was what was so disappointing with last Saturday's loss at Kansas State was we just didn't play clean football," Brown said. "Today, this was a clean football game for us, starting with offense going 87 plays with zero turnovers. We ran the ball effectively, and we had some huge plays on third and fourth down. We also scored (four) red zone touchdowns."
Defensively, senior linebacker
Josh Chandler-Semedo led a patched-up WVU defense with seven tackles.
"I thought defensively we're running on fumes a little bit," Brown said. "(True freshman)
Saint McLeod played every snap today (at spear safety) and (safety)
Scottie Young played in the dime package the whole game. We didn't allowed any explosive plays and we finished the game."
West Virginia outgained the Longhorns 459 to 355 and had an 87 to 58 advantage in offensive plays. In the first half, West Virginia had a 301 to 135 total yardage edge and a 48 to 25 margin in plays.
"I want to thank our fans," Brown said. "People used their tickets, and I think the thing that gets overlooked is we don't have school next week (for Thanksgiving recess). The dorms are closed and for our students to show up and participate, I really thank them. The fans were a factor in the game and it matters, I can't emphasize that enough.
"We had a ton of recruits here. We had some official visitors here and we probably had 20-plus recruits that had offers that were here and the atmosphere matters," Brown added.
Members of the 2012 Orange Bowl team in town for its 10-year reunion were recognized at the end of the first quarter.
Today's win boosts West Virginia's record to 6-5 in its series against Texas, and depending upon what happens with the Longhorns' media rights negotiations with the Big 12, it could be the final time Texas plays a football game in Morgantown.
Texas plays out its regular season next Saturday in Austin against Kansas State, while West Virginia will try and become bowl eligible next Saturday night at Kansas.
The Jayhawks are playing at TCU this afternoon.
