DAVIDSON, N.C. – The West Virginia University wrestling team won nine of its ten matches to gain a 34-3 victory over the Davidson Wildcats inside the Baker Sports Complex, Friday night.
"You know we won, but you know sometimes when you lose you wrestle well and when you win you don't wrestle well, and I think it was the latter," fourth-year coach
Tim Flynn said.
This win marks the first of the season for the Mountaineers (1-1) as they improve to 3-0 against Davidson (0-4) in the all-time series. Six of the ten competing mountaineers reached double digits in points as nine of ten combined for 23 takedowns throughout the event.
Senior
Caleb Rea grabbed the first win of the night for West Virginia over Davidson's Gavin Damasco. The 141-pounder started out aggressively, nearly taking hold of Damasco's leg 40 seconds into the match. Damasco avoided the takedown attempt by rolling forward and latching on to Rea's ankle.
After the two went back to a neutral stance, the Weirton, West Virginia, native eventually flipped his opponent over, ducked under the swinging leg, and secured the takedown. Rea took down Damasco for a second time in the second period and added a point for riding time on his way to 6-2 decision in his dual debut.
Redshirt Sophomore
Jeffrey Boyd followed up with a 11-2 major decision over Garrett Stewart at 149. Like Rea, Boyd scored a takedown in the first period and continued the attack with four more takedowns toward his first dual win of the season.
No. 14/16
Peyton Hall ultimately did the most damage in the form of a fall. With 39 seconds remaining in the match, the sophomore hooked Jaden Hardrick's arms and cradled him for the victory to stay undefeated (7-0) at 165 pounds.
Senior Jakcson Moomau (197), redshirt junior
Alex Hornfeck (157), and sophomore
Dennis Robin (174) each earned their first dual victories, while redshirt sophomores
Anthony Carman (184) and HM/33
Michael Wolfgram (HWT) continued their winning ways.
The Mountaineers are back at it on Sunday, Nov. 21, against No. 5 NC State. The dual is set for 1 p.m. ET inside the William Neal Reynolds Coliseum.
"I think we have to wrestle a thousand times better than we did tonight or it's going to be a long day," coach Flynn concluded.
