Box Score MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team was unable to overcome Baylor, as the Mountaineers suffered a 3-0 loss on Friday evening, in Morgantown, West Virginia, at the WVU Coliseum. The Bears (12-4, 6-1 Big 12) took the match from the Mountaineers (13-5, 3-4 Big 12) in set scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-22. 
 
Prior to the match, head coach Reed Sunahara was honored for his 400th career win. He recorded the win on Sept. 3 when the West Virginia University Volleyball team made history after sweeping No. 23-ranked Michigan in its fourth match of the season, in Annapolis, Maryland.
 
Sunahara has compiled 84 wins at WVU and opened the 2021 season 10-0 for the first time in his WVU career and second in WVU volleyball history.

"We just made too many mistakes," said coach Reed Sunahara. "They are a good team. Tomorrow night we have to go back and battle. We are always going to battle, and that is why I am proud of this team. They never give up. We just have to do a better job from the start."
 
Two Mountaineers tallied double-digit scores, including fifth-year senior outside hitter Adrian Ell who recorded 14 kills and senior setter Lacey Zerwas who tallied 29 assists. Ell also recorded a team-high of two service aces. 

Overall, WVU finished the match hitting .179 with 39 kills and seven team blocks. 

Baylor gets on the board first, but West Virginia gained a point of its own. The teams traded points and kept the score close. WVU went up 12-9 and continued to hold the lead. A pair of West Virginia kills brought the Mountaineers to 14-10 and Baylor calls for a timeout. Following the timeout, BU tallies a pair of points. Nearing the end of the set, the teams traded points. A few Bears scoring runs tied the set 23-23. West Virginia had set point, but Baylor responded and took set one, 26-24. 
 
Following set one, the Bears took an early 15-5 lead. The Mountaineers fought back nearing the end of the set. Trailing by 11, WVU recorded a few scoring runs to bring the score to 22-18. The 6-0 scoring run was not enough to give the Mountaineers set two, and Baylor took the win, 25-20.
 
After Baylor tallied a point to open the set, WVU went up 3-2. The Bears added a pair of 3-0 scoring runs to take the lead, but the Mountaineers added a 3-0 scoring run of their own to take back the lead, 12-11. The teams traded points until Baylor regained a 15-13 lead. Both teams continued to exchange the lead until Baylor took the final set and match, 25-20.

West Virginia returns to the court on Saturday for another match against Baylor. First serve is set for 5 p.m. ET at the WVU Coliseum.
 
Saturday's match will be the annual Pink match presented by the WVU Cancer Institute. There will be a pink ribbon giveaway to the first 500 fans. The WVU Cancer Institute will be on site selling shirts for a minimum $10 donation. It will be Mountaineer Kids Club Day for WVU volleyball with a special giveaway and food for Kids Club members in attendance, as well as a t-shirt pickup day. The MKC mascot Musket as well as Mr. Twister will be in attendance.
