MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball freshman middle blocker Mirjam Karoline Kask has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week following a record-breaking defensive performance over the weekend.
Kask totaled 16 blocks over two matches, including a conference-high 11 against Florida Atlantic on Friday. Her 11 blocks helped the Mountaineers set a program record with 21 team blocks, the most in the rally-scoring era at WVU.
She currently ranks No. 2 nationally among freshmen in blocks per set on the season. Her performance against the Owls also has her tied for No. 2 in program history for single-match block assists and No. 4 for single-match total blocks since the NCAA initiated 25-point rally scoring in 2008.
Kask's 11 blocks against FAU are the most by a freshman nationally and the most by any Big 12 player this season. Her 11 block assists in the match are the fourth-most nationally among all players this season.
In her first season of collegiate volleyball, Kask has played in four career matches. She also added nine kills on 19 attempts against the Owls, hitting .368 in the match.
