Brown Names Doege Starting Quarterback For Season Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia coach Neal Brown today named junior Jarret Doege his starting quarterback for the Mountaineers' season opening game against Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Brown made the announcement during his weekly radio show produced by the Mountaineer Sports Network from Learfield IMG College.
"We had a long quarterback battle and we really feel like we have two quarterbacks on our roster that can win Big 12 games right now, which I think is a huge positive," Brown said. "We hoped the competition was going to go through the spring and we would be able to name a starter a little earlier but it didn't work out that way.
"We went three weeks into camp, had two true scrimmages and one kind of partial scrimmage, and after that Jarret Doege will be our starter heading into the Eastern Kentucky game," Brown said. "He won the job."
Doege, a former Bowling Green transfer, beat out former Oklahoma transfer and last year's starting quarterback Austin Kendall during preseason training camp, which concluded Tuesday evening.
The Mountaineers began preparations for Eastern Kentucky this afternoon.
Doege, a Lubbock, Texas resident, started the final three games last year when he led West Virginia to a pair of impressive late-season road victories at 24th-ranked Kansas State and TCU.
In four total appearances, Doege completed 79-of-120 passes for 818 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He passed for a season-best 307 yards in a 20-13 home loss to 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State.
Doege played two seasons at Bowling Green in 2017-18 where he passed for 4,041 yards with 39 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Kendall, a fifth-year senior from Waxhaw, North Carolina, started nine games last year before giving way to Doege and will begin the 2020 campaign as West Virginia's No. 2 quarterback.
He completed 187-of-304 passes for 1,989 yards and 12 touchdowns with 10 interceptions for the Mountaineers in 2019. Kendall threw for a career-high 367 yards in a home loss to Texas and totaled 355 yards in a home defeat to Texas Tech.
"Austin Kendall is much improved and this was a true battle right down to the last scrimmage," Brown said.
West Virginia's 2020 opener against Eastern Kentucky will kick off at noon and will be televised nationally on FS1.
Previously, WVU announced that no fans will be permitted to attend the game due to safety precautions from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Only essential game operations personnel and families of the players and football staff will be admitted.
