MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The highest graded NFL punter of the last decade?
Thomas Morestead? Johnny Hekker?
No and no.
It's former Mountaineer standout Pat McAfee according to a tweet sent out PFF, which touts itself as the premium data and analytics site to all 32 NFL teams.
McAfee was a part of West Virginia's three-year Top 10 run under Rich Rodriguez that included bowl victories over Georgia in the 2006 Sugar, Georgia Tech in the 2007 Gator and Oklahoma in the 2008 Fiesta.
He was also on the Mountaineer team in 2008 that defeated North Carolina in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte.
McAfee was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist as a place kicker during his junior season in 2007 and he averaged a career-best 44.7 yards per punt during his final collegiate campaign in 2008.
Following the Senior Bowl, McAfee was a seventh-round choice of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2009 NFL Draft and played eight seasons there before retiring in 2016 following a Pro Bowl season to pursue a career as an entertainer and broadcaster.
McAfee averaged a league-best 49.7 yards per punt during his final season in 2016. His net average of 42.7 that year also led the league.
McAfee's 46.4 yards-per-punt career average is eighth best in NFL history.
Today, you can listen to his nationally syndicated The Pat McAfee Show on Westwood One and DAZN. The Pittsburgh native is also a contributor to ESPN's Thursday Night College Football broadcasts and his name continues to be circulated as one of the leading candidates for the network's new Monday Night Football broadcasting crew.
