MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the West Virginia University wrestling team earned a win, but it was not enough as the Mountaineers fell to South Dakota State, 29-15, in its first home conference match of the season at the WVU Coliseum on Friday.
Freshman Scott Joll, sophomore Caleb Rea and redshirt sophomores Noah Adams and Sean Mullican earned a win in the contest.
"We got pinned twice when we were winning matches and if we would have won those, we would have won the match," WVU coach Tim Flynn said. "South Dakota State is a team that is doing well this team. We're getting better, it's just not all clicking in yet."
The Jackrabbits (8-5, 4-2 Big 12) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after earning a pair of decision victories at 125 and 133.
At 141, Rea captured WVU's first win of the night after he claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory over SDSU's Clay Carlson in the second tie-breaking period. The result pushed Rea's record to 13-11 on the year and moved him into a tie for third on the team in wins this season.
After allowing an escape point to begin the second period, Rea registered an escape of his own to begin the third to tie the match at one. The grapplers battled in the sudden victory period, but neither could register a point as the match went into a pair of tie-breaking periods.
In the first tie-break, Rea once again chose to start at the bottom, where he earned his second escape of the match to take a 2-1. He then controlled Carlson through the entire second tie-breaking period to earn the win.
The Jackrabbits responded with three straight pins at 149, 157 and 165, to take a commanding 24-3 lead.
Despite falling behind 2-1 in the first period of the 174 bout, Joll was awarded a penalty point in the second to tie the match at two. He then used a quick reversal and four near-fall points in the third to earn an 8-3 win. The win marks Joll's second career dual match win and moves him to 10-14 on the year.
South Dakota State extended its lead as redshirt sophomore Hunter DeLong suffered a loss by technical fall in his first dual match of the season at 184.
Adams, who is ranked No. 2 nationally in the NCAA Coaches Poll, earned his 25th straight win of the year as South Dakota State was forced to forfeit the 197-bout due to injury.
In his dual-match debut, Mullican finished the match strong for WVU as he topped SDSU's Blake Wolters, 5-2. The Meyersville, Maryland, struck first as he registered a takedown in the first period to take an early, 2-0, advantage. Wolters cut the lead in half in the second with an escape, but a third-period reversal and a riding time point proved to be the difference as Mullican earned his first career dual win.
With the loss, West Virginia fell to 3-9 (0-4 Big 12) this season and moved to 0-5 all-time against the Jackrabbits.
WVU will make its final road trip of the regular season next weekend, as it heads to the Hawkeye State for a pair of conference bouts. The Mountaineers begin the swing through Iowa on Friday, Feb. 14, with a match against No. 15 Northern Iowa, before heading to Ames to take on No. 18 Iowa State on Saturday, Feb. 15.
