WVU Stumbles in Cedar Falls

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt sophomore Noah Adams extended his winning streak to 26 matches as West Virginia University wrestling team fell to No. 16 Northern Iowa, 36-6, at West Gym in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Friday.
"Northern Iowa is a very solid team that is extremely talented at every weight class," WVU coach Tim Flynn said. "When you face a team of that caliber, you have to be ready to go when the whistle blows."
The Panthers (7-3, 6-1 Big 12) took control of the match early after earning a pin and a major decision at 125 and 133, respectively.
At 141, sophomore Caleb Rea trailed No. 14 Michael Blockhus 8-3 at the end of the second period. Rea then chose to start the third period from the bottom position, where he would earn a quick escape to cut the lead to four. He then earned a takedown and four-nearfall points to take a 10-9 lead at the end of regulation, but Blockhus earned the riding time point to send the match into overtime with a 10-10 tie.
Neither grappler could register a point in the sudden victory period, as the bout went into the tie-break. Rea allowed an escape in the first period of the tie-break, before choosing chose to start the second half on the bottom. Rea couldn't escape Blockhus' control as Blockhus earned an 11-10 decision.
Northern Iowa stretched the lead to 18-0 after freshman Liam Lusher suffered a 22-6 technical fall to No. 10 Max Thomsen at 149.
Redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck picked up WVU's first win of the night at 157 with a 7-3 decision over UNI's Paden Moore. Hornfeck struck first in the bout, securing a quick takedown in the first period, before allowing an escape to take a 2-1 lead into the second.
After a scoreless second period, Hornfeck chose to start the final period from the bottom position. After Hornfeck earned an escape point, Moore scored his first takedown of the match to tie the match at three.
Hornfeck took control of the match with an escape and a takedown of his own and secured the riding time point en route to a 7-3 win. The decision marks Hornfeck's 13th overall victory and his fifth dual win of the season.
Following a 10-minute intermission, the Panthers added three wins with a decision and two pins to take a 33-3 lead.
Adams, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Coaches Panel, put the Mountaineers back on track with a 6-1 decision over Isaiah Patton. After a scoreless first period, Adams secured a takedown and allowed an escape in the final minute of the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the third. After starting the third from the bottom, Adams earned an escape and registered a takedown to stretch the lead. He was awarded the riding time point to secure a 6-1 decision.
The victory pushed Adams' win streak to 26 matches this season. He also moved to 13-0 in dual matches and is now 5-0 in Big 12 play.
At 285, redshirt sophomore Sean Mullican dropped a hard-fought battle to No. 12 Carter Isley, 2-6, to close the match as UNI secured a 36-6 win over the Mountaineers.
With the loss, West Virginia fell to 3-10 (0-5 Big 12) this season and moved to 0-6 all-time against the Panthers.
Next up, the Mountaineers conclude their two-match slate in the Hawkeye State by traveling to Ames to take on No. 19 Iowa State on Saturday, Feb. 14. The Big 12 dual at ISU's Hilton Coliseum is set to begin at 8 p.m. ET.
