MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia concludes its two-game Big 12 road tour with tonight's game against Texas at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.
The Mountaineers (19-8, 7-7) are looking to snap a four-game conference road losing streak that most recently saw them get upended in overtime by TCU in Fort Worth.
West Virginia led by 10 at one point in the first half, then fell behind by seven early in the second half before battling back to take a 54-53 lead with 1:55 left on
Derek Culver's basket.
The Mountaineers also had a chance to win it in regulation, but
Taz Sherman was unable to get his short jumper to go down with six seconds remaining.
Culver led West Virginia with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Sherman contributed 16 while making his second consecutive start.
Sherman is averaging 15 points over the Mountaineers' last three games against Baylor, Oklahoma State and TCU.
Freshman
Oscar Tshiebwe continues to lead West Virginia in scoring and rebounding with averages of 11 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, but he is coming off a one-point, five-rebound effort at TCU on Saturday afternoon.
Culver is the only other WVU player averaging double figures in points at 10.4. He is pulling down 8.7 rebounds per contest.
Texas recently snapped a four-game losing streak with last Wednesday's 70-56 win over TCU and added a 70-59 victory on Saturday at Kansas State.
The Longhorns (16-11, 6-8) have gotten themselves back into the NCAA tournament discussion and with games remaining against 17
th-ranked West Virginia at home, road games at Texas Tech and Oklahoma and a home date against Oklahoma State, there is enough there to get off the bubble.
Texas appeared to be dead in the water following its 29-point loss at Iowa State on Feb. 15, which dropped its record to 14-11, but the Longhorns have rallied.
Guard Andrew Jones scored 21 points and Will Baker came off the bench to contribute 20 in the Longhorns' 14-point home win against TCU, while Ramey Courtney's 26 lifted Texas to the 11-point win at Kansas State.
Jones (10.9 ppg.), Ramey (11.0 ppg.) and junior guard Matt Coleman (12.5 ppg.) are averaging double digits in Texas' three-guard lineup.
Junior forward Jerico Sims, who scored 20 in a loss to Kansas earlier this year, has missed Texas' last three games with a back injury and could be sidelined for an extended period of time.
Junior guard Jase Febres, an outstanding 3-point shooter, has also been on the shelf with a knee injury sustained in the Texas Tech loss on Feb. 8. He has not played in Texas' last four games.
Earlier this year in Morgantown, West Virginia shot 51.4 percent in its 38-point victory over Texas – the Longhorns' fifth-worst defeat in school history and their largest-ever in Big 12 play.
Nine different Mountaineers players scored at least seven points, led by Culver's and Tshiebwe's 13. Febres led Texas with 18.
Tonight's game will tip off at 7 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on ESPNU (Clay Matvick and Lance Blanks).
MSN radio coverage on affiliates throughout West Virginia and online via WVUsports.com and the popular mobile app WVU Gameday begins at 6 p.m.
Texas holds an 11-9 overall advantage in series play but West Virginia has won five of the last eight meetings.
