MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team caps the regular season with a pair of Big 12 matches against Wyoming on Saturday, Feb. 22, and Utah Valley, on Sunday, Feb. 23, in Morgantown.
The match against the Cowboys will be held at University High in Morgantown, beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET. All fans that attend the match will receive free admittance. Live stats for Saturday's contest can be found on TrackWrestling.
"It's always fun to get an opportunity to wrestle at different venues in our community," WVU coach Tim Flynn said. "The match is free to attend, so hopefully we can get some local wrestling fans to come and watch us compete. There will be some good matches on Saturday, they have a really solid lineup. It will be another challenging match in the Big 12."
On Sunday, WVU will host its fourth Beauty and the Beast event against Utah Valley, as the WVU wrestling and gymnastics teams compete at the same time inside the WVU Coliseum. The second-ever Mountaineer Fan Festival will be held prior to the start of competition, with the Coliseum Gold Gate opening at noon. A fan meet-and-greet on the Coliseum concourse will cap the day's events. Additionally, the first 500 Mountaineer Maniac students in attendance will receive free pizza and a giveaway item.
Sunday also features special appearances by Mr. Twister, the face-painting and balloon animal artist, and Musket, the Mountaineer Kids Club's mascot. MKC members can pick up their t-shirts on the day of the event. One ticket gains fans admittance into Mountaineer Fan Fest and the Beauty and the Beast competition. Tickets are on sale now at WVUGAME.com and also will be available for purchase at the WVU Coliseum Gold Gate Ticket Office.
Fans can watch the match live at WVUsports.com/Watch and the WVU Gameday App. Tony Onarato and Eric Little will have the call.
"Beauty and the Beast is a great event, where people can come out and get exposed to two different sports," Flynn continued. "Then we have Fan Fest, so I think any fan in the area that is interested in sports should come. You can get an opportunity to watch two different sports and meet student-athletes from all of the sports that aren't competing, so it's a really neat day."
Saturday's match between the Mountaineers and Cowboys marks the third meeting between the Big 12 foes. Wyoming holds a 2-0 advantage in the series after earning a 19-18 win in 2010 and holding off the Mountaineers, 33-15, last season in Laramie, Wyoming.
The Cowboys are 8-9 this season with a 4-3 mark in conference play after defeating Northern Colorado, 22-11, on Feb. 16. The stout Wyoming lineup features six grapplers in the starting lineup, led by redshirt junior Montorie Bridges, who ranks No. 9 at 133. Mark Branch is in his 11th season as the head coach and has led the Cowboys to over 120 dual wins in his tenure.
The Mountaineers and Wolverines will also meet for the third time in the regular-season finale on Sunday. The two teams have split the previous two matches. WVU earned a 26-13 win last season, after Utah Valley topped WVU, 24-9, in the first dual match of the 2017-18 season.
"Utah Valley is a team that's very similar to us so we're really excited about that and hopefully we can get on a roll before the Big 12 Championships."
UVU's lineup features four ranked grapplers, including brothers, redshirt senior No. 19 Tanner Orndorff (197) and redshirt sophomore No. 7 Tate Orndorff (285). The Wolverines are led by Mark Williams, who is in his 14th season.
Six members of the West Virginia University wrestling team have been named to an Academic All-Big 12 team, as announced by the league on Thursday.
Redshirt senior David Smith (biology), redshirt sophomores Sean Mullican (exercise physiology) and Joey Thomas (athletic coaching education) and redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck (civil engineering) were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while redshirt sophomore Noah Adams (criminology) and sophomore Caleb Rea (criminology) garnered second-team accolades.
Of note, two wrestlers appear in the top 33 of their respective weight classes in the second of four coaches' panel rankings for the 2019-2020 season, released on Feb. 13. Redshirt sophomore Noah Adams ranks No. 2 at 197 pounds, while junior Nick Kiussis ranks No. 27 at 165 pounds. The final rankings will be used in determining qualifiers for the 2020 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which will be held at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from March 19-21.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will take a week off from competition before heading to the 2019 Big 12 Wrestling Championship on March 7-8. The event will be held at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
