MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team wrapped up its 2019-20 road schedule with a 36-6 loss to No. 19 Iowa State, at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday.
 
The Cyclones (8-4, 5-1 Big 12) secured a victory in eight matches in the contest, while the Mountaineers (3-11, 0-6 Big 12) won two. Redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck (157) and redshirt sophomore Noah Adams (197) scored individual victories for the Mountaineers.
 
"The guys fought hard tonight," WVU coach Tim Flynn said. "Alex (Hornfeck) and Noah (Adams) wrestled well. I was proud of the way Alex battled back to get a gritty win against a good opponent."
 
Wrestling at 197 pounds, No. 2 Adams recorded his ninth win over a ranked opponent this season with a 6-2 decision over No. 31 Joel Shapiro. The Coal City, West Virginia, native, improved his record to 27-0 on the season and 14-0 in dual meets.
 
Following an early takedown from Shapiro, Adams earned an escape and registered a takedown of his own to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period. After a scoreless second period, Adams chose to start the third on the bottom and earned a reversal to push his lead to 5-2. At the end of regulation, the riding time point was awarded to Adams, giving him the 6-2 victory.
 
After falling behind early at 157, Hornfeck battled back to earn a dramatic, 6-4, come-from-behind win over Grant Stotts in overtime. The Mars, Pennsylvania, native, trailed for most of the match after allowing a pair of takedowns in the first period. He cut the lead to two at the end of the second after he recorded his second escape of the match.
 
After Stotts chose to start the third period on the bottom, Hornfeck fought off a number of escape attempts to secure the riding time point. Stotts was given his second stall warning of the period with just three seconds remaining in regulation to send the match into overtime. Hornfeck then registered a quick takedown in the sudden-victory period to register WVU's first win of the night.
 
Hornfeck improved to 14-13 on the season with the win. The result marks his second straight victory, after he notched a 7-3 decision on Friday against No. 16 Northern Iowa.
 
Starting at 125 pounds, sophomore Joey Thomas dropped a hard-fought, 9-5 decision to Corey Cabanan. Sophomore Lucas Seibert then battled No. 14 Todd Small, dropping a 15-7 major decision at 133 pounds.
 
West Virginia fell behind 17-0 after the Cyclones earned a major decision and a pin at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.
 
Following Hornfeck's win at 157, ISU earned a decision at 165, a major decision at 174 and a pin at 184, to take a 30-3 lead.  
 
The Cyclones finished the night with a win as WVU's Sean Mullican suffered a major decision to No. 13 Gannon Gremmel.
 
Next up, the Mountaineers will return to Morgantown to wrap up the regular season with a pair of Big 12 matches against Wyoming, on Feb. 22, and Utah Valley on Feb. 23. The match against Wyoming will take place at University High in Morgantown and will begin at 5:30 p.m. All fans that attend the match will be admitted for just $1.
 
WVU will host its fourth Beauty and the Beast event against Utah Valley, as the WVU wrestling and gymnastics teams will compete at the same time inside the WVU Coliseum. Additionally, Mountaineer Kids Club members can pick up their membership t-shirts prior to the match.
