"Dayton is a good team," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "They've only lost to good teams – all teams with only one loss, actually. Last year, we went out there and had a very, very difficult time beating that team. (Dayton coach) Dennis (Currier) has a good group this year, and he's done a fantastic job. Their record is very deceiving. The guys know not to underestimate this team because they are very good with good players. We'll have to be at our best to beat Dayton."
Saturday marks the third meeting between the Mountaineers and Flyers, with West Virginia owning a 2-0 edge in the all-time series. The two squads last met on Sept. 22, 2018, a 2-0 Mountaineer victory at Baujan Field in Dayton.
WVU (4-1-1) is coming off a 2-1, come-from-behind, overtime win at Cincinnati on Sept. 17. The Mountaineers conceded an early goal in the 19th minute before rallying in the second half and overtime to earn the road win. Senior midfielder Andres Muriel Albino tied the match at 1 when he scored off an indirect free kick in the 50th minute, before junior defender Kevin Morris won it with a golden goal in the 96th minute. The Mt. Airy, Maryland, native headed in a long cross sent in by freshman midfielder Luke McCormick to earn his second career game-winner.
West Virginia outshot the Bearcats, 15-11, and held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
The Mountaineers enter Saturday's match unbeaten in 21 of their last 26 nonconference, home games at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU also enters the contest ranked No. 20 nationally in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, which was released on Tuesday. WVU sits No. 24 in this week's College Soccer News poll, while it is receiving votes in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll.
West Virginia ranks No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference and tied for No. 18 nationally in shots per game (16.0). WVU also has tallied the most corner kicks in the MAC, with 39, and is No. 2 in the conference in goals (10) and assists (14).
