"Delaware is a tough opponent for us, especially on the road for their home opener," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "They have good players and are always very organized. (Delaware coach) Ian Hennessy is one of the top coaches in the country and always has his teams prepared, so we will need to be at our best to find a result in this one."
Monday's match marks the third overall meeting between the Mountaineers and Blue Hens. The two squads last met in Morgantown, a 2-0 WVU win at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Then-junior defender Ryan Kellogg scored a pair of second-half goals for the Mountaineers, while then-junior defender Sebastian Garcia-Herreros tallied two assists in the victory.
WVU leads the all-time series, 2-0.
West Virginia (1-0) began the 2019 campaign with a 1-0 win at Monmouth on Aug. 30, in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Opening the season away from home for the fourth consecutive year, senior forward Ethan Shim's 51st-minute goal was the difference, helping the Mountaineers improve to 13-3-1 in season-opening weekend matches since 2011. Junior defender Kevin Morris was credited with the assist on the goal, the first game winner of Shim's career.
The Mountaineers outshot the Hawks, 18-6 (8-3 SOG), while junior goalkeeper Steven Tekesky made three saves, all of them coming after halftime.
Delaware (0-1) is led by 14th-year coach Ian Hennessy, who owns an overall record of 101-117-30 with the program. He last guided Delaware to the NCAA Tournament in 2016 after the squad won the CAA Tournament title. The Blue Hens, who finished 5-11-1 in 2018, opened the season with a 5-0 loss at Villanova on Aug. 30.
UD was picked to finish fifth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in the league's preseason poll. The squad went 4-3-1 in conference play a year ago, good for fourth place.
Delaware returns its leading goal scorer in sophomore defender Timo Hummerich, who tallied four goals and eight total points in 2018. Sophomore midfielder Jake Steinberg also returns to the team after recording a team-best three assists last fall.
The Mountaineers are making their first-ever trip to Delaware on Monday. WVU enters the match ranked No. 20 in the College Soccer News Preseason Top 30, as well as No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches National Preseason Poll and No. 25 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Top 25.
