MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A stout James Madison defense has made a Solomon Vanhorse first-quarter touchdown run hold up in a 7-3 Dukes' halftime lead.
JMU has controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, the Dukes rushing 26 times for 137 yards and limiting the Mountaineers to only 18 yards on 10 attempts.
West Virginia's longest gain from scrimmage was an Austin Kendall 20-yard pass to T.J. Simmons that ended up resulting in Evan Staley's 38-yard field goal. Staley had missed a 49-yard field goal attempt early in the first quarter when the Mountaineers were unable to cash in on a muffed punt.
The defense got another JMU turnover two possessions later at the WVU 36.
The only touchdown drive of the first half was JMU's seven-play, 80-yard march that resulted in Vanhorse's 9-yard touchdown run with 1:47 left in the first quarter.
JMU was in position to score three more with 7:56 left in the second quarter, but Darius Stills was able to get a hand on Ethan Ratke's 27-yard field goal attempt and the football bounced harmlessly into the end zone.
JMU quarterback Ben DiNucci completed 7-of-10 passes for 69 yards and Vanhorse was the game's top rusher in the first half with 47 yards.
Austin Kendall, making his first start at West Virginia, completed 14-of-23 passes for 89 yards – five of those going to Simmons for 58 yards.
West Virginia will receive the ball to begin the second half.
More details to come.
