WVU in Top-25 for Fourth Consecutive Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the fourth consecutive week, the West Virginia University baseball team is in the national rankings, appearing in five top-25 polls.
The Mountaineers check in as high as No. 20 in this week's Perfect Game poll. WVU is No. 21 in the NCBWA and Baseball America rankings, No. 22 in the D1Baseball top-25 and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll. Additionally, WVU is No. 21 in the latest NCAA RPI.
West Virginia has been ranked for four consecutive weeks, and came in as high as No. 17 each of the last two weeks.
The Mountaineers' appearance in this week's polls is the seventh time they have been ranked since 1982, with all seven appearances, four times in 2019, twice in 2017 and once in 2018, coming under seventh-year coach Randy Mazey.
WVU is one of four Big 12 Conference teams ranked in at least one national poll this week.
Along with its national ranking, junior left-handed starter Nick Snyder was named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week and has been nominated for the Golden Spikes Award/D1Baseball.com Performance of the Week. One of four nominees, fans can vote for Snyder at @USAGoldenSpikes on Twitter. Snyder also was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday after he struck out 16 batters in a one-hit, complete game shutout of Marshall on April 30.
Statistically, the West Virginia pitching staff is No. 12 nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (7.45), No. 13 in strikeouts per nine innings (10.0), No. 20 in shutouts (4), No. 29 in ERA (3.64) and No. 31 in WHIP (1.29). WVU also is second in the league in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.40). Additionally, the Mountaineers' 81 stolen bases are No. 27 in the country and the most in the Big 12.
Individually, junior right-handed pitcher Alek Manoah is No. 8 nationally in strikeouts (108), No. 24 in WHIP (0.93), No. 27 in complete games (2), No. 32 in hits allowed per nine innings (6.10), No. 39 with in ERA (2.07), No. 41 in strikeouts per nine innings (11.76) and No. 43 in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.14). Junior center fielder Brandon White is second in the Big 12 in stolen bases (21), while junior right-handed reliever Sam Kessler is third in saves (7), sophomore second baseman Tyler Doanes is third in stolen bases (17) and freshman shortstop Tevin Tucker is third in sacrifice bunts (7). Additionally, Manoah and Snyder are tied for third in the league with six wins.
Up next, the Mountaineers begin a four-game roadtrip at Virginia Tech on Wednesday, May 8, at 6 p.m. ET. WVU then travels to Kansas State for its final Big 12 series of the season. The series in Manhattan, Kansas, commences on Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. ET, and continues on Saturday, May 11, at 5 p.m. ET. The finale at Tointon Family Stadium is slated for Sunday, at noon ET.
