No. 20 WVU Walks Off KU Again for DH Sweep
April 20, 2019 09:40 PM | Baseball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A wild pitch scored the game-winning run in the 11th inning as the No. 20 West Virginia University baseball team walked off Kansas, 4-3, for the second time on Saturday at Monongalia County Ballpark.
With the pair of walk-off wins, the Mountaineers (24-13, 8-6 Big 12) secured their fourth consecutive Big 12 series victory. WVU has won 10 of its last 12 games and will go for the sweep of the Jayhawks (19-18, 4-10 Big 12) on Sunday, at 1 p.m. ET.
In game two of Saturday's doubleheader, junior center fielder Brandon White scored from third on a wild pitch with one out in the 11th inning. Following a 2:40 weather delay at the end of the sixth inning, West Virginia took a 3-1 lead in the eighth, but Kansas tied the game at 3-3 on a two-out, two-RBI single in the ninth. The 11-inning victory came after West Virginia walked off Kansas, 1-0, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader on a ninth-inning home run by junior first baseman Marques Inman.
"It's so hard to win a doubleheader, no matter who you play," WVU coach Randy Mazey said. "Kudos to (Kansas), they're down to their last strike, two outs and two strikes in the ninth and tie it up off of our closer. We actually played pretty well after the rain delay, but they did too. They grinded it out, their pitchers did a good job. We have to use everybody on this team to win games usually, and we had to do it again today."
Saturday's second contest was won in the 11th, as White singled through the left side with one out. Senior right fielder Darius Hill followed with a single to put runners on the corners with one out for sophomore designated hitter Tristen Hudson. On a 1-1 pitch, Hudson attempted to check his swing on a ball down and inside that got away from KU's catcher. The ball rolled slowly to the wall, which allowed White to score easily from third.
The Mountaineers scored their four runs on 11 hits, while the Jayhawks were held to three runs on nine hits. Sophomore left-handed starter Jackson Wolf gave up a run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 6.0 innings prior to the rain delay. Junior right-hander Sam Kessler got the win to improve to 3-2. In 2.2 innings, he gave up two hits and struck out five.
Freshman left fielder/third baseman Phillip Dull was one of four Mountaineers with two hits, his first career multi-hit game, and he added an eighth-inning RBI single. Sophomore catcher Paul McIntosh hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season in the sixth inning.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first five innings, though West Virginia left two on in the first and fifth and Kansas stranded two in the fourth.
The first runs of the game came in the sixth inning, as KU took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run with two outs by Nolan Metcalf. The long ball came after a 4-6-3 double play. WVU came right back to tie it in the bottom of the inning, on McIntosh's solo home run with one out.
Following the rain delay, junior left-hander Nick Snyder relieved Wolf on the mound. He gave up a leadoff double in the seventh, but escaped the jam, and pitched a perfect eighth, with two strikeouts.
The Mountaineers took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Hill led off the inning with a walk and took third on a single by Inman. A wild pitch scored Hill, and Hudson, who pinch ran for Inman, scored on Dull's RBI single through the left side.
In the ninth, Kessler came on in relief with one out after a hit batter and single with one out. He got a strikeout before a single up the middle tied the game, at 3-3.
The Mountaineers and Jayhawks each left a runner on in the 10th, and KU added a runner stranded in the 11th before White scored the game-winning run on the wild pitch.
