Manoah Fans 15 in 1-0, Walk-Off Win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For a second consecutive outing, junior right-handed starter Alek Manoah struck out 15 batters in a complete-game shutout as junior first baseman Marques Inman hit a walk-off home run to propel the No. 20 West Virginia University baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Kansas on Saturday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark.
In the opening game of a doubleheader, Manoah turned in his third consecutive scoreless outing as the Mountaineers (23-13, 7-6 Big 12) notched their second walk-off win in their last three games. As he extended his shutout streak to 31.2 consecutive innings, Manoah did not allow a run on three hits with no walks and 15 strikeouts. The shutout performance comes a week after he gave up just four hits with 15 strikeouts in 9.0 innings last week in a win over No. 11 Texas Tech.
Manoah earned his team-leading sixth win of the season against the Jayhawks (19-17, 4-9 Big 12) with the help of Inman's walk-off home run to center field to lead off the ninth inning. The homer, which sailed 424 feet, was his sixth of the season and team-high 15th of his career. Inman was credited with the game-winning RBI for a third consecutive win.
The 15 strikeouts for Manoah gives him 95 this season and 200 in his career. He is the fourth player in program history with multiple 15-strikeout games in the same season, and the first since John Radosevich struck out 17 once and 16 twice in 1965.
The Miami native struck out two batters in an inning four times and struck out three in the first. He had at least one strikeout in every inning and retired 12 in a row beginning in the second inning. He had four perfect 1-2-3 innings.
WVU's offense was held to one run on seven hits. Inman was one of two Mountaineers with two hits in the contest.
An infield single with two outs was all that Manoah allowed in the first, as he struck out three in the frame. He hit a batter to lead off the second, but proceeded to retire the next 12 batters he faced.
West Virginia left two on in the second with two outs and stranded one in the third and fifth.
Two batters reached against Manoah in the sixth, on a strikeout and wild pitch and fielding error, but Manoah escaped the jam with a strikeout to leave runners on the corners. In the bottom half, the Mountaineers put two on with two outs, which began with a double by Inman, but a flyout ended the inning.
A leadoff single and a double put runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the ninth for Kansas, but Manoah worked out of it to keep his shutout streak intact. He got the first out via a strikeout and a fielder's choice was the second. Inman fielded a hard-hit grounder and stepped on first for the last out of the ninth.
That set up Inman's heroics in the bottom of the frame, on a 1-2 pitch sent to center.
