Manoah Strikes Out 15 in Complete-Game Gem

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University junior right-handed starter Alek Manoah struck out a career-best 15 batters in a 2-0, complete-game shutout of No. 11 Texas Tech on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The reigning NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, Manoah was lights-out on the mound to lead the Mountaineers (21-12, 5-5 Big 12) to their third consecutive victory and seventh in their last eight games.
In the series-opening win, Manoah held the Red Raiders (22-10, 5-5 Big 12) to no runs on four hits in 9.0 innings. He did not walk a batter to go along with his 15 strikeouts.
"You can't imagine he could pitch any better," WVU coach Randy Mazey said. "The way Manoah pitched tonight, I don't know how he could've done better. There's nothing he did that you look back at that game and say I wish he'd have done that or that. He was just on point with every single thing he was doing."
Manoah's 15 strikeouts were the most by a Mountaineer since David Maust had 15 against Cleveland State on March 11, 2001. The complete game was the first by a WVU starter since BJ Myers went 9.0 on April 7, 2017, against Kansas.
The Miami native improved to 5-2 and earned his seventh quality start in nine starts this year. Manoah, who lowered his ERA to 2.08 on the season and 1.99 in Big 12 play, has not allowed a run in his last 22.2 innings pitched.
"He did a good job, he executed everything we talked about," Mazey added. "He was super good tonight. There's nothing you can say that he didn't do well. He pitched ahead in the count. He didn't walk anybody. He had a ton of strikeouts. He was as good at the end as he was in the beginning."
Manoah did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning and allowed a runner to reach second base just once, on a leadoff double in the eighth that was followed by three consecutive strikeouts. The junior right-hander had three strikeouts in the third and eighth innings and had two punchouts in an inning three times. He retired the side in order five times.
West Virginia's two runs, both with two outs, came on six hits. WVU scored one in the first and another in the third, which was enough for Manoah.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first inning on an RBI single by junior first baseman Marques Inman. That scored senior right fielder Darius Hill, who doubled. West Virginia scored first for the fifth consecutive game and the 25th time this year and scored in the first inning for the sixth time in the last eight games and the 18th time in 2019.
WVU added a run in the third to make it 2-0, again with two outs, as sophomore designated hitter Paul McIntosh singled home Hill.
McIntosh was one of two Mountaineers with two hits, while Hill scored both runs and had a hit in the contest.
The Red Raiders' first baserunner came on a leadoff single in the fourth inning. However, Manoah got a foul popup, fielder's choice and strikeout to end the inning. A two-out single in the sixth inning was followed by an inning-ending popup. TTU led off the eighth with a double, but Manoah struck out the next three he faced to leave the runner on second. The ninth inning saw a leadoff single, but Manoah again did not allow the runner to advance, with a fielder's choice, strikeout and groundout to end the game.
