Manoah Named to Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball junior right-handed pitcher Alek Manoah has been named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list, it was announced by USA Baseball on Wednesday.
Manoah, who also was recognized on the award's preseason watch list, is the third player in program history named to a Golden Spikes Award watch list and joins left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave and first baseman Ryan McBroom, who were honored in 2014.
Manoah is one of two Big 12 Conference players on the midseason watch list.
The annual award recognizes the top amateur baseball player in the country, and the winner of the 42nd Golden Spikes Award will be named on June 14, in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation. The midseason watch list includes 40 of the nation's top amateur players, from college and high school baseball. The semifinalists will be announced on May 15.
Manoah ranks No. 18 in the country with eight appearances and 65 strikeouts. His 11.32 strikeouts per nine innings is third-most in the Big 12, while his four wins, 4.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 5.92 hits allowed per nine innings are all fifth-best in the conference.
A Miami native, Manoah owns a 4-2 record with a 2.44 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched. He has 15 walks, has allowed 14 earned runs on 34 hits and has held opposing hitters to a .191 batting average. Six of his eight starts have been quality starts.
On Tuesday, Manoah was named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week and was recognized with the Golden Spikes Award/D1Baseball.com Performance of the Week award by USA Baseball. On Monday, he was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
In an 11-1 victory at No. 23 Oklahoma State on Friday, Manoah struck out 11 batters in 8.0 shutout innings. He retired the side in order five times and limited OSU to just three baserunners, only one of which advanced to second base, in the eighth inning. Manoah's performance helped WVU win the series at OSU, its second consecutive series victory against a top-25 opponent.
Up next, the Mountaineers are at Maryland today before a third consecutive Big 12 weekend series against a top-25 foe, vs. No. 11 Texas Tech from April 12-14.
