Box Score WACO, Texas – The West Virginia University baseball team suffered a 10-4 loss in eight innings in the final game of the series at Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
The Mountaineers (13-10, 0-3 Big 12) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-1 after six, but the Bears (16-6, 3-0) rallied with six runs in the seventh and three in the eighth.
WVU scored its four runs on seven hits and left eight runners on base, while BU's 10 runs came on eight hits with seven runners left on. Before the game, both teams agreed that a new inning would not begin before 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT, due to West Virginia's travel schedule, and the game was stopped after eight innings.
Sophomore designated hitter
Paul McIntosh led the team with two hits and hit his team-best fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning. Junior third baseman
Kevin Brophy led the squad with two RBIs.
Junior right-handed starter
Kade Strowd suffered his second loss of the season. In 6.2 innings, he gave up six runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
For the second time in the series, the Mountaineers jumped ahead in the first inning, and scored three runs on two hits to take a 3-0 lead. The first three batters reached base, on a single and two walks. That loaded the bases for junior first baseman
Marques Inman, who drove in sophomore second baseman
Tyler Doanes with a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded again, Brophy delivered a two-RBI single to left field, which scored senior catcher
Ivan Gonzalez and senior right fielder
Darius Hill.
After West Virginia left a runner on third in the second inning, Baylor got on the board with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the frame.
That made it a 3-1 game, but Strowd proceeded to retire the next 12 batters he faced, with perfect innings in the third, fourth and fifth.
McIntosh's home run led off the sixth inning, a shot to left field that traveled 464 feet. With a 4-1 lead, two walks put a pair on with two outs, but WVU could not add to its advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, back-to-back walks with two outs put a pair on, but Strowd escaped the jam.
West Virginia left two on in the top of the seventh before the Bears took a 7-4 lead with six runs on four hits in the bottom half. With two on and two outs, back-to-back singles scored the first two runs and made it a 4-3 game. An intentional walk loaded the bases and ended Strowd's day, and freshman left-hander
Beau Lowery relieved him. A walk forced in the first run to tie the game, and a two-RBI double down the left-field line gave Baylor its first lead of the game. Sophomore right-hander
Tristen Hudson came in and gave up a run on a wild pitch before he got a groundout to end the inning and strand the bases loaded.
In the eighth, with junior right-hander
Dillon Meadows in for Hudson, BU added a three-run home run by Andy Thomas to make it 10-4.
