Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team scored a season-high 14 runs on 12 hits en route to a 14-1 victory against Youngstown State on Tuesday afternoon at Monongalia County Ballpark.
A six-run second inning helped the Mountaineers (13-7) jump out to an early 7-0 lead, as eight players had at least one hit and seven drove in one or more run in the win. Eight of WVU's 14 runs came with two outs.
West Virginia has scored eight or more runs in seven of its last eight games and has won eight of its last 10 contests. The Mountaineers improved to 6-0 at home.
Junior left-handed starter
Nick Snyder and five relievers combined to hold the Penguins (1-18) to one run on six hits, while the WVU defense did not commit an error.
"This might be one of those games that was kind of boring for the players and the fans to sit through, but I had the time of my life sitting there watching a game like that," WVU coach
Randy Mazey said. "We pitched well, hit well, played pretty good defense. So, to answer your question, this is as good as we can be right now. Getting ready to go into a really, really, tough conference weekend."
WVU's offensive attack was led by freshman shortstop
Tevin Tucker, who had a career-best four RBIs with two hits and three runs scored in three at-bats with a walk. Tucker hit his first career home run in the sixth inning, a two-run shot with two outs.
Sophomore second baseman
Tyler Doanes added two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, and junior first baseman
Kevin Brophy had a pair of hits and two RBIs.
On the mound, Snyder earned his team-high-tying third win of the season (3-1) and held YSU to four hits in 4.0 shutout innings. He struck out four and walked one. Five relievers followed with 1.0 innings each, including three freshmen. Four of WVU's five relievers did not allow a hit.
"They all did great when they came in there," Mazey said of his relievers. "Relief pitching is something like a field goal kicker, confidence is key. You want to get guys out there and get them a clean inning and have confidence going in there. So next time they get out there, if it's a 0-0 game, they are going to pitch with confidence. We have a lot of guys to choose from in the bullpen right now, so we are just trying to see who the hottest guys are. It is nice to get five or six different guys on the mound today."
WVU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out unearned run. Senior right fielder
Darius Hill walked and scored from first on a fielding error by YSU's right fielder on a fly ball by junior designated hitter
Marques Inman.
It marked the 15th time in 20 games the Mountaineers scored first and the ninth time they scored in the first inning.
West Virginia added six runs on three hits in the second inning to make it 7-0. Three consecutive walks to lead off the frame loaded the bases for Tucker, who doubled down the left-field line for WVU's first hit of the game. That scored two, and a sacrifice fly by Doanes scored another. Tucker then stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by the Penguin catcher. The final two runs of the inning came with two outs, when Brophy singled to left to score senior third baseman
Ivan Gonzalez, who walked, and Hill, who singled.
After Snyder left a runner on third in the second inning and two on in the third, the Mountaineers added two more in the bottom of the third inning, both with two outs, to extend their lead to 9-0. Doanes singled up the middle to score Tucker for the first run, and Hill doubled to left-center to bring in Doanes for the second run.
Freshman right-hander
Gabe Kurtzhals threw a perfect fifth inning in relief of Snyder, on 11 pitches. West Virginia followed that up with another three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its advantage to 12-0. An RBI triple by Doanes was followed by an RBI single by freshman third baseman
Phillip Dull, his first career RBI. Senior designated hitter
Andrew Zitel capped the inning with a two-out double that scored Dull.
Freshman righty
Madison Jeffrey allowed just one baserunner in the sixth on a hit batter, but got a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
WVU made it 14-0 in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to Tucker's first career home run. The long ball to left, with two outs, scored sophomore catcher
Paul McIntosh.
Youngstown State scored its lone run in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout that followed a leadoff double, walk and fielder's choice. However, senior lefty
Zach Reid limited the damage and got a strikeout to end the inning and leave two on.
Sophomore right-hander
Tristen Hudson left two on in the eighth inning, and Dull threw a perfect ninth to seal the win.
