Mountaineers Extend Win Streak

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The West Virginia University baseball team extended its win streak to five consecutive games with a 9-3 victory at Morehead State on Tuesday afternoon at Allen Field.
Every starter had at least one hit as the Mountaineers (10-5) scored nine runs for the second consecutive game on a season-high 12 hits. Meanwhile, junior left-handed starter Nick Snyder struck out a career-best 10 batters as WVU held the Eagles (10-5) to three runs on six hits.
In the first game of a two-game midweek series in Morehead, Kentucky, West Virginia's offensive attack was fueled by three home runs, two doubles, six stolen bases and five walks. WVU handed MSU its first home loss in seven games this season.
"That was pretty well-rounded," WVU coach Randy Mazey said. "Nick Snyder and Beau Lowery pitched really well, we played tremendous defense, didn't make any errors. Hit some home runs, the power showed up, and we stole six more bases. We were good really in every facet of the game today."
Senior right fielder Darius Hill, sophomore catcher Paul McIntosh and sophomore second baseman Tyler Doanes all homered to power the WVU offensive. McIntosh led the team with a career-best three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and was a triple shy of the cycle. Doanes had two hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases, and Hill's home run was a three-run shot in the first inning.
Snyder was fantastic on the mound in a career-long 6.0 innings pitched. Along with his 10 strikeouts, he held Morehead State to two runs on four hits with four walks. Snyder recorded his first quality start of the year and improved to 2-1 on the season.
"He had a couple chances to give in," Mazey said. "They got a couple guys on base, he hit some guys and walked a couple guys, but he always came back and got a big strikeout when we needed it and got right back in the strike zone. With all the games we have in a short period of time, that's important to get a pretty good outing out of your starter, so kudos to him today."
Freshman lefty Beau Lowery pitched the final 3.0 innings to pick up his second save of the year. He gave up one run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
West Virginia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to Hill's three-run home run, his second home run of the season and team-leading 13th of his career. The long ball over the right-field wall scored Doanes, who led off the game with a walk, and senior catcher Ivan Gonzalez, who followed Doanes with a single.
The 3-0 first-inning lead marked the fifth time this season WVU scored in the first inning and the 10th time West Virginia scored first.
The Mountaineers added two runs in the third to extend their lead to 5-0. McIntosh drove in the first run on a double to left-center to plate junior first baseman Kevin Brophy. McIntosh advanced to third on the throw, which then allowed him to score on a wild pitch.
Morehead State got a run back in the bottom half of the third on a double and RBI single. However, the baserunners both came with two outs, and Snyder limited the damage and WVU took a 5-1 advantage into the fourth inning.
Snyder struck out three in the fourth and left two on thanks to a pair of hit batters.
McIntosh added a solo home run in the fifth inning to extend WVU's lead to 6-1. It was his team-best third homer of the season, all coming in the last five games.
In the bottom half of the fifth, two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Eagles, but Snyder got a 6-4-3 double play to limit the damage to one run, followed by a popup to end the inning.
West Virginia got the run back in the sixth inning to take a 7-2 lead. Freshman shortstop Tevin Tucker led off the frame with a single to right, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez.
After two batters reached in the third and fourth, and three reached in the fifth, Snyder threw a perfect 1-2-3 sixth inning, with two strikeouts.
Snyder issued a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, and Lowery entered in relief. The freshman got a double play to clear the bases, but a solo home run cut into the Mountaineer advantage and made it 7-3.
However, WVU answered right back with two runs in the eighth inning, on Doanes' two-run home run. It was his second of the season and third of his career.
Lowery struck out two in the eighth, and McIntosh caught a runner stealing to end the inning. In the ninth, Lowery got a strikeout to end the game.
