MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team will compete in its second tournament of the season, on Saturday, Nov. 9, as the team travels to Boone, North Carolina, for the 2019 Mountaineer Invitational.
The tournament is hosted by Appalachian State University and will take place at Varsity Gym. The first set of matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m. ET. The all-day event will be broadcasted live on FloWrestling.com and live results can be found at FloArena.com.
Appalachian State, who has won four straight Southern Conference regular season championships, are joined by Air Force, Duke, Oregon State, Kent State, Central Michigan and WVU.
"Last weekend, we learned what we needed to work on to get better," second-year coach Tim Flynn said. "This week we have been working and changing some things to see if we can get some different results, so I'm excited to see the progress that our guys continue to make."
Two Mountaineers, junior Nick Kiussis and redshirt sophomore Noah Adams, enter Saturday's tournament with rankings by Open Mat and Intermat. Kiussis is ranked No. 16 by Open Mat and No. 17 by Intermat at 165 pounds, while Adams sits at No. 11 and 19 by Intermat and Open Mat, respectively.
Last weekend, Adams and sophomore Caleb Rea claimed tournament wins as WVU opened the 2019-20 season at the 2019 Southeast Open in Roanoke, Virginia, on Nov. 3. In addition to the tournament wins, five Mountaineers earned top-three finishes on the day: redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck, junior Nick Kiussis, senior Brandon Ngati, Adams and Rea. In total, 17 Mountaineers went a combined 42-24 on the day.
Adams and Rea pace the team with perfect 4-0 records this season, while freshman Scott Joll enters his second career tournament with a 5-1 record on the year.
Looking ahead, West Virginia competes in its first dual match of the season on Nov. 16, as it takes on Big 12-member Northern Colorado at Bank of Colorado Arena, in Greeley, Colorado. The match marks the second consecutive season the Mountaineers and Bears have faced each other in the dual-match opener, as WVU topped UNC, 22-14, in Morgantown, last season.
