MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Sam Ehlinger threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead 11th-ranked Texas to a 21-14 halftime lead over upset-minded West Virginia.
The Longhorn junior completed 13-of-21 passes for 176 yards including touchdown passes of 22 yards to Malcolm Epps and 13 yards to John Burt.
He also ran in the go-head score with 3:28 left in the second quarter when he broke two arm tackles at the line of scrimmage to reach the end zone.
West Virginia's Austin Kendall had an efficient 15-of-18 passing performance in the first half, including a pretty 44-yard scoring strike to freshman Sam James on the game's opening possession. He also executed a brilliant fake on a third-and-goal play from the 1 to walk in for WVU's second touchdown.
Kendall was intercepted once and that led to Ehlinger's first touchdown pass of the game two plays later.
The Mountaineers also failed to get points on two other possessions when Evan Staley's field goal attempts from 36 and 47 yards into the closed end of the stadium were unsuccessful.
Total yardage was close with the Longhorns owning a 271 to 233 advantage, but Texas had a 41 to 31 edge in total plays.
The Longhorns will get the ball to begin the second half.
