MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 23-ranked West Virginia University men's soccer team capped its two-match homestand with a 4-1 loss to No. 25 San Diego on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, the Mountaineers received a goal from sophomore Tony Pineda in the 80th minute but couldn't draw any closer. With the loss, WVU fell to 6-3-1 on the season.
"The better team won, there's no doubt about that," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "We just made critical errors, uncharacteristic, critical errors, that directly led to goals. When you play against a better team, some of the lackadaisical things that we do, we'll get punished for them. We got punished for them tonight."
After the two squads worked to settle in throughout the opening 15 minutes of the match, the Toreros (8-1-1) struck first with a goal in the 17th minute. San Diego registered the tally on a header goal from inside the box.
Then, USD added to its lead with two quick goals in the 33rd minute. First, San Diego made it 2-0 when a shot from 10-yards out got by a diving Mountaineer junior goalkeeper Steven Tekesky, before the Toreros added to their lead 16 seconds later when a USD attacker got loose and scored a breakaway goal.
The visitors led, 3-0, after 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Mountaineers worked to find answers in their final third in an attempt to cut down the deficit. Pineda's goal came in the 80th minute, when the Statesville, North Carolina, native got a head on a ball sent in by senior defender Albert Andres-Llop.
The breakthrough was Pineda's second of the year, making it 3-1 contest.
Moments later, USD added its fourth to help it reach the finish line in the road victory. The Toreros outshot WVU, 8-3, including 5-2 in shots on goal.
The Mountaineers held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks in the loss. Pineda led the squad with two shots on the night, while Tekesky made one save.
USD was the Mountaineers' sixth opponent in their last eight matches to enter with a winning record. The Toreros also were WVU's third ranked opponent of the campaign.
Next up, WVU hits the road for a nonconference matchup at North Carolina. Kickoff at Fetzler Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is set for 7 p.m. ET.
