MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – An estimated 6,000 college basketball fans got an opportunity to get their first peek at this year's West Virginia University men's basketball team on Friday night in the annual Gold-Blue Debut game played inside the WVU Coliseum.
The Gold team, featuring mostly newcomers, defeated a Blue squad comprised of primarily returning players Derek Culver, Emmitt Matthews Jr., Jordan McCabe, Brandon Knapper and Chase Harler, 67-54.
Junior college transfer Taz Sherman led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting while Jermaine Haley chipped in with 15 and Logan Routt added 12 points and six rebounds for the Gold.
Touted freshman Oscar Tshiebwe paced the Blue squad with 15 points and a scrimmage-best 11 rebounds.
Also for the victorious Gold, freshman guard Miles McBride contributed 11 points and handed out three assists while Arkansas transfer Gabe Osabuohien held his own in the paint going up against Culver and Tshiebwe by scoring 7 points and grabbing a Gold-best eight rebounds.
A running clock was utilized in the second half.
Veteran college basketball officials Ted Valentine, Mike Eades and Tony Chiazza worked tonight's scrimmage.
Beforehand, West Virginia coach Bob Huggins addressed the crowd.
"Well folks, we're ready to do it again - only a whole heck of a lot better than we did it a year ago," he said. "Let's go win a championship!"
Afterward, fans were invited to stick around and get autographs with their favorite players on the floor.
The next opportunity for WVU fans to watch this year's squad will be on Friday, Nov. 1, when Duquesne travels down from Pittsburgh to play a charity basketball game against the Mountaineers with funds benefitting the Dayton Oregon District Tragedy established to help victims of the senseless shooting that occurred in Dayton, Ohio, in early August.
The regular season will begin a week later on Friday, Nov. 8, when West Virginia plays host to Akron at the WVU Coliseum. The Zips are two years removed from a 27-win campaign under veteran coach John Groce.
Tickets for the 2019-20 season are currently on sale through the Mountaineer Ticket Office and can be purchased by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
