WVU Earns Third Shutout Win

Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The West Virginia University men's soccer team won its third consecutive match with a 2-0 victory at Dayton on Saturday night.

The Mountaineers (5-3) earned their second consecutive shutout and third of the season and handed the Flyers (4-2-3) their first home loss of the year. WVU's two goals were the first given up by UD at Baujan Field this season.

Junior defender Pascal Derwaritsch gave West Virginia a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute for his team-high-tying third goal of the year, and sophomore forward Spenser Myers scored his first career goal to make it 2-0 in the 73rd minute.

"Again, what an incredible performance from our team this evening," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "Undermanned, missing two starters again tonight, but our boys rose to the occasion, and so many different players rose to the occasion. Just a fantastic performance all around. It's another shutout, and we're pleased to get all three points against a very good Dayton team."

Junior defender Albert Andres-Llop and sophomore defender Kevin Morris earned assists on West Virginia's first goal, and freshman Josh DiMatteo was credited with an assist on WVU's second goal. It was Morris' and DiMatteo's first career assists, and Andres-Llops' first of the year.

The Mountaineers' first goal came at 34:12, off the head of Derwaritsch. The play began on a free kick near midfield, where Andres-Llop sent the ball into the box. From eight yards out, Morris flicked the ball up, where it was deflected off a Dayton defender's head to Derwaritsch. He headed the ball across and in, over the Dayton keeper.

Myers made it 2-0 at 72:57. DiMatteo flicked the ball up to a running Myers, who beat the keeper one-on-one.

In goal for the Mountaineers, sophomore Steven Tekesky made three saves, two in a three-minute span in the second half.

West Virginia was out-shot 18-7, but had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams had two corner kicks.

Junior midfielder Andres Muriel Albino had the Mountaineers' first chance of the game, a shot blocked in the eighth minute. Dayton had the next three shots, the first two off target and the third blocked, before senior forward Rushawn Larmond had a shot saved in the 23rd minute.

Following Derwaritsch's goal in the 35th minute, Dayton had six shots in the final 10 minutes of the half. However, Tekesky made a save and another two shots were blocked to preserve WVU's 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Tekesky made two saves in a three-minute span. The first came in the 57th minute on a one-on-one chance inside the box, while the second, in the 60th minute, came on a ball in from 20 yards out.

Myers' goal followed in the 73rd minute, and WVU held Dayton to three shots the rest of the match. The best chance for the Flyers came in the 84th minute, but a long shot in hit off the crossbar.
