
WVU Hosts Maryland in NCAA Regional Rematch

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In a rematch of last season's NCAA Regional, the West Virginia University baseball team opens the month of May with a midweek matchup against Maryland on Tuesday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m. ET, at Monongalia County Ballpark.

Fresh off a weekend series win over No. 19 Texas, the Mountaineers (22-19) have won three of their last four and six of their last eight. WVU has won back-to-back weekend series and is ranked No. 34 in the NCAA RPI and has the No. 2 strength of schedule in the nation.
The Mountaineers rank among the NCAA and Big 12 leaders in several categories. West Virginia leads the Big 12 and is No. 20 nationally with 72 stolen bases, while WVU is No. 3 in the league and No. 18 in the country with 15 triples and No. 3 in the Big 12 and No. 23 in the NCAA with 40 double plays turned.
Individually, Darius Hill averages 17.5 at-bats per strikeout, a ratio that is No. 10 in the country. Braden Zarbnisky's 0.97 walks per game are No. 11 in the NCAA, while he is No. 15 nationally with 0.59 stolen bases per game. Marques Inman also leads the Big 12 and is No. 14 in the country with 0.43 doubles per game.
The Terrapins (19-24) have won two in a row and three of their last four after a series win at Michigan State.
Tuesday's contest comes a year after WVU and UMD met in the NCAA Tournament. In the Winston-Salem Regional, West Virginia posted a 9-1 win on June 2, in the Tournament opener. The Mountaineers followed with an 8-5 victory on June 4 to advance to the Regional Final.
Junior right-hander Christian Young (2-1, 6.66 ERA) will make his second start of the season for the Mountaineers. He will face redshirt-freshman lefty Billy Phillips (1-0, 6.75), who also makes his second start.

SCOUTING MARYLAND
Maryland is 19-24 on the season, 9-13 at home, 8-11 on the road and 2-0 at a neutral site. The Terrapins are in the midst of a seven game roadtrip, which began with a series win at Michigan State and concludes this weekend at Nebraska.
Nick Dunn leads the team with a .341 batting average, 57 hits, 32 RBIs and 10 home runs. Kevin Biondic is second with a .289 average, 48 hits and 25 RBIs.
On the mound, Biondic has made 16 relief appearances and owns a 0.79 ERA in 22.2 innings. Tyler Blohn leads the team with five wins and 54 strikeouts with a 4.10 ERA in 59.1 innings.
Rob Vaughn is in his first season as head coach after serving as an assistant and associate head coach with the program for the past five years. In his time at UMD, Vaughn has helped produce two All-Americans, four freshmen All-Americans and 10 all-conference selections.
SERIES HISTORY VS. TERRAPINS
West Virginia and Maryland have met 66 times, including three times in 2017. After a road loss in the regular season, the two teams squared off in the 2017 NCAA Tournament in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where WVU won both games, 9-1 and 8-5.
The series began in 1899, with a 19-6 road loss. WVU won the next matchup, 19-5, in 1902. The first game in the series in Morgantown came in 1922.
The Mountaineers are 10-6-1 all-time vs. the Terrapins at home following a 4-1 win in 2016.
West Virginia's 2017 NCAA Tournament began with a 9-1 win over Maryland, as the Mountaineers hit six home runs on June 2. WVU jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back as Jimmy Galusky and Kyle Davis both hit two home runs. BJ Myers added 5.2 shutout innings in relief to pick up the win.
Two days later in an elimination game, West Virginia rallied with a four-run eighth inning to come back and win, 8-5. Trailing 4-0, WVU scored eight unanswered runs. A one-run sixth and a two-run seventh was followed by a four-run eighth, as the Mountaineers took their first lead of the day. Meanwhile, reliever Jackson Sigman was lights-out on the mound, allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
In the first meeting in 2017, the Terrapins won a 7-6 home contest. The Mountaineers scored three runs in the first inning and led 4-0 after three, but UMD, ranked No. 21 at the time, rallied with a two-run sixth inning and a five-run seventh to improve to 12-1 at home.

West Virginia travels to Kansas from May 4-6, for a three-game Big 12 series in Lawrence, Kansas. First pitch of Friday's opener is at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT, while Saturday's contest begins at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT. Sunday's finale is set for 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.

- West Virginia lost the series-opener, 11-6, on Friday night. The Mountaineers took a 2-0 lead and led 6-3 after six innings, but the 19th-ranked Longhorns rallied late. Darius Hill and Brandon White each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Mountaineers, and Ivan Gonzalez had a team-best two RBIs. Right-handed starter BJ Myers endured two weather delays lasting a total of one hour, 27 minutes and allowed three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 6.0 innings.
- In Saturday's 8-6 victory, the Mountaineers evened the series thanks to a three-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning that came after UT scored three of their own to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth. The win was secured when righty Alek Manoah stranded the bases loaded with no outs in the ninth inning. Manoah also left two on in the top of the eighth after UT had taken its lead. Gray led the Mountaineer offense with two hits and three RBIs on a pair of home runs. He had his second multi-homer game of the season. All but one WVU starter had a hit in the win. The upset win came in front of a season-high crowd of 2,618 at Monongalia County Ballpark, the ninth-largest home crowd in program history.
- The Mountaineers benefited from a three-run fourth inning, a four-run eighth and a strong performance from the WVU pitching staff in Sunday's 8-3 win. West Virginia scored eight runs on 12 hits while holding Texas to three runs, two earned, on five hits. Starter Isaiah Kearns was strong on the mound and earned his first quality start of the season, while reliever Tristen Hudson and Manoah held UT scoreless. At the plate, Tyler Doanes had a career-best four RBIs with two hits and two runs scored to lead the offense. A bases-loaded, three-RBI triple in the eighth inning turned a 4-3 WVU lead into a four-run advantage.
- In the three-game series, Gray extended his team-best and career-long hit streak to 18 games and his reached-base streak to 19 games, while Hill extended his career-long hit streak and reached-base streak to 17 games. Additionally, Braden Zarbnisky extended his reached-base streak to a career-high-tying 18 games and Marques Inman's reached-base streak was extended to a career-best 16 games.
