MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After claiming a team title in its last trip to the Sunshine State, the West Virginia University golf team returns to Florida to compete in the Seminole Intercollegiate, hosted by Florida State in Tallahassee on Friday and Saturday.
The Seminoles will host 12 programs in addition to the Mountaineers at the par-72, 6,965 Golden Eagle Country Club. Big 12 foe Kansas State joins WVU in the field, while Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Western Kentucky, Troy, Arkansas State, Illinois State, Winthrop, Southern Illinois, James Madison, Nicholls State and Western Carolina will also take part in the event.
The 2017-18 season marks WVU's third year at the tournament, though it has moved locations and changed format since last season. Golfers will be put in groups of five with their own teammates on Saturday and will tee off in an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for 36 holes of play. Sunday pairings will be arranged by score, with tee times starting at 8 a.m. off holes No. 1 and 10.
"While this is our third consecutive year playing in the Seminole Intercollegiate, this will be our first played at Golden Eagle," coach Sean Covich said. "The practice round day will be very important for us. We were familiar with Southwood, where we posted some really good numbers, but this is a brand-new venue for us. We need to pay attention and learn as much as we can during the practice round. This is, yet again, another different lineup for us. I think different combinations show our team's depth and allow everyone to get some experience in tournament action."
WVU took home the team title last week at the Martin Downs Collegiate in Palm City Florida, the team's second win of the season. Freshman Matthew Sharpstene set a program record with a low round of 64 on the final day of play, finishing as the runner-up in the field. Junior Max Sear and freshman Mark Goetz tied for third.
Sharpstene will play in the No. 1 spot in the lineup, followed by Goetz at the No. 2. Sear will play third. Sharpstene and Sear are tied for the team lead with scoring averages of 72.56. Goetz, who tied the previous program record of 66 one day before it was broken, is averaging 73.75 strokes per round.
Sophomore Etienne Papineau and junior Tristan Nicholls round out the lineup for the Mountaineers. Papineau boasts a scoring average of 73.31 this season with a runner-up finish at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational last fall. Nicholls owns a trio of top-25 finishes this season.
