MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Max Sear sits in the top 10 after two rounds of play at the Seminole Intercollegiate, hosted by Florida State at Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday.
The Mountaineers moved up two spots in the second round to tie for sixth place with one round remaining. WVU shot 291-289=580 to finish four over par on the day. No. 20 Florida State leads all teams at 19 under par with a 557, while Jacksonville is currently in the runner-up spot at 11 under par with a 565. James Madison sits third at 12 under with a two-round score of 566.
"Playing all five guys in the same group was a new experience for us," Coach Sean Covich said. "I think our guys were a little uptight that first round. We made a lot of mistakes the first round; a lot of immaturities showed up that first round. Luckily, we battled back and closed out the second round with a solid effort. Need to play a lot better tomorrow."
Sear leads WVU and sits tied for sixth at four-under par. He used four birdies in the first round before carding two birdies and an eagle in the second, shooting 69-71=140.
Sophomore Etienne Papineau is in 21st place after two rounds with a total score of 144. He shot an even-par 72 in both rounds and is even on the day.
Freshman Mark Goetz is four over par and tied for 40th. He carded six birdies across 36 holes, but bogeyed six holes and double-bogeyed two more to shoot 75-73=148. Classmate Matthew Sharpstene is a stroke back and tied for 44th place at five over. He 76-73=149 in two rounds of action.
Junior Tristan Nicholls shot two-over par in the first round with a 73, but struggled in the second and shot five over with a 77. He is tied for 52nd at 152 for eight over.
Playing as an individual, senior Avery Schneider used five birdies to shoot one under with a 71. However, he stumbled in the second round of the day and shot four over par to finish at 71-76=147 to tie for 33rd.
WVU will be paired with Cincinnati and Arkansas State for the final round of play. Golfers will tee off in tee times starting at 8:55 a.m. EST on Sunday.
