AUSTIN, Texas – West Virginia's Will Grier and Texas' Sam Ehlinger is treating us to a good, old-fashioned Big 12 shootout.
Both Grier and Ehlinger have tossed two first-half touchdown passes and Ehlinger has added another on the ground to give the Longhorns a slim 28-27 lead at halftime.
The two teams combined for 614 total yards and punted only once each in a back-and-forth first half.
West Virginia scored on five of its six first-half possessions, but an avalanche of penalties caused the Mountaineers to kick field goals on their opening and concluding possessions of the first half, and then two unsportsmanlike penalties resulted in the Longhorns getting a short field for their second touchdown.
Texas' first touchdown also came on a short field when WVU was held three and out and Billy Kinney's short punt into a stiff wind gave Texas the ball at its 47.
West Virginia committed 12 first-half infractions in all, including an unsportsmanlike penalty called on starting left tackle Yodny Cajuste that resulted in his ejection from the game. Junior Kelby Wickline replaced him.
Grier completed 17-of-29 passes for 206 yards and touchdown throws of 60 and 18 yards to Sills V, while Ehlinger was 13-of-20 for 189 yards with scoring tosses of 21 yards to Lil'Jordan Humphrey and 32 yards to Tre Watson.
Watson also scored a 5-yard touchdown run and Ehlinger snuck in from the 1, while Martell Pettaway broke free for a 55-yard run in the second quarter and Evan Staley punched through field goals of 45 and 44 yards.
Texas will get the football to begin the second half.
