MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the third time this season, senior midfielder Joey Piatczyc of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Piatczyc led the Mountaineers (9-5, 2-0 MAC) to a 2-1 overtime win at Akron on Saturday, scoring the game-tying goal with 13 seconds left in regulation and adding the game-winner three minutes into overtime.
It was his first career two-goal match, while his two points on the game-winning goal gives him 17 game-winning points in his career, eighth-most in a single season in program history.
The Mountaineers trailed 1-0 12 minutes into the second half, but Piatczyc led an offensive attack that resulted in the game-tying goal at 89:47 and the game-winner at 92:27. He led the team with three shots, all on goal, as he guided the offense to a 10-1 advantage in shots following Akron's goal.
Piatczyc leads the conference with three game-winning goals, and he leads the league with four points and two goals in MAC play. The senior paces the team with 12 points and has four goals and four assists on the year.
The MAC honor is Piatczyc's third this season, as he also was recognized on Sept. 4, and Aug. 28. Additionally, Piatczyc was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week yesterday, his third WVU accolade of the year.
In his career, Piatczyc has a program-record 29 assists, and also owns the school record for assists per game, with 0.46, and shares the school record with four multi-assist matches. He ranks No. 2 all-time with 11 game-winning assists.
Piatczyc's impressive 2018 season came after he missed 2017 due to an injury.
West Virginia is in first place in the conference, with a perfect 2-0-0 record and six points. The Mountaineers own road wins at Western Michigan and Akron, last year's regular-season and tournament champions, respectively.
