"This is the first of many down the final stretch as we hit October," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "Pacific is a very good team, well-coached, well-organized. For the most part, they're mostly juniors and seniors, so they're experienced and organized. They've had success, and I think that in itself will eliminate the fear factor of them coming over here. They know how to win. It's going to be a tough game. They're one of the top teams out in the west coast this year. It's a big RPI game for us, it's an excellent non-conference game for us as well. I think our guys, coming off rest finally, and preparation, are really looking forward to the challenge on Sunday afternoon."
Sunday's match comes after the Mountaineers (6-2-2) played five games in a 14-day stretch, with four of them coming on the road. West Virginia had won three in a row before a loss on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
Several Mountaineers continue to rank among the national and conference leaders in several statistical categories. Senior Jad Arslan's three game-winning goals continues to rank No. 6 nationally and No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference. He and sophomore Albert Andres-Llop are second in the MAC with four goals and fifth with 0.40 goals per game. Andres-Llop is fourth with 10 total points and Arslan is fifth with nine points. Junior Jorge Quintanilla ranks No. 2 in the MAC and 31st nationally with four assists, while he also is fourth in the conference with 0.40 assists per game.
In goal, junior Stephen Banick is third in the league and 11th nationally with five shutouts. He is second in the MAC with 28 saves and third in minutes played (834:32), save percentage (.757) and saves per game (2.80).
