MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 14, 2017) – The No. 6-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team kicks at No. 14 Princeton on Friday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m., at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, in Princeton, New Jersey. The match will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
The Tigers (6-0) are the fifth ranked opponent the Mountaineers (5-2) have faced in as many weeks. WVU is 2-2 against ranked opponents this season.
Friday marks the team's first road match since opening the 2017 season with a 1-0 win at No. 5 Georgetown on Aug. 18.
"It is was so important for us to open the season with a tough road match at No. 5 Georgetown," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "Because of that experience, this weekend will be business as usual. Having said that, going into Princeton's home environment will be a challenge for us. It's important for us to see how we address playing on the road before we enter Big 12 Conference play next week."
The Mountaineers and the Tigers meet for the second straight season and for the first time in Princeton. WVU is 2-1 all-time against Princeton, including a 3-0 win on Sept. 16, 2016, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Senior midfielder Alli Magaletta netted the game-winner in the 41st minute, and classmate Michaela Abam added one of two second-half insurance goals. The loss was the Tigers' first of the season.
WVU enters the weekend showing a 1.71 goals-per-game average. The squad is outscoring opponents, 12-7.
Junior forward Sh'Nia Gordon paces the team with 7 points (2 G, 3 A). Abam also shows two goals, both game-winners, which ranks No. 24 nationally.
Nationally ranked within the top 20 for the first time since 2004, Princeton enters Friday's contest riding a six-match win streak. Most recently, the Tigers defeated New Hampshire, 3-1, on Sept. 10, in Princeton. The team also earned 2-0 wins at No. 20 NC State and No. 18 Wake Forest.
Princeton is outscoring its opponents, 14-1, and ranks No. 34 nationally with a 2.33 goals-per-game average. The team also ranks No. 5 in the NCAA with a .167 goals-against average (GAA), and sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Grossi ranks No. 7 with a .200 GAA.
Sophomore forward Courtney O'Brien tallied four goals last weekend for the Tigers, including both scores in a 2-0 win over Rider on Sept. 7. The points were the first of her career.
