MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore designated hitter/right-handed pitcher Braden Zarbnisky has been named the Big 12 Co-Player of the Week after a strong week both at the plate and on the mound.
It is the first Big 12 weekly honor of Zarbnisky’s career, and the fourth for the Mountaineers this season. Sophomore Michael Grove and junior BJ Myers have previously earned the league’s pitcher of the week honors, while Brandon White has been recognized as the conference’s freshman of the week.

Zarbnisky helped lead West Virginia to a 3-2 upset win over No. 4 Texas Tech on Sunday, with a team-best three hits and a dominating 3.0 innings on the mound. He held the Big 12’s best offense to no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Starting all four games at designated hitter last week, Zarbnisky led the team with a .500 average, seven hits, four runs scored and added his first career home run with three RBIs, and was a perfect 2-2 on the basepaths. In the series against Texas Tech, Zarbnisky also led the team with five hits, five total bases and a .455 batting average.
The Mountaineers will play a pair of games against Penn State this week, at home on Tuesday May 9, at 6:30 p.m. ET, and at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park on Wednesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. Tickets to the game at the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates are available at
