Mountaineers Bag Exhibition Win Over Wheeling Jesuit

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Eleventh-ranked West Virginia got 19 points off the bench from freshman forward Teddy Allen to blow past Division II Wheeling Jesuit 98-50 in an exhibition game this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers, coming off finals week, had an open weekend in their schedule and opted to play their second exhibition game now instead of at the beginning of the season to bridge the long gap between last Saturday night's Pitt game and Wednesday night's game against Coppin State.
Today, the Cardinals stuck close to West Virginia for a good portion of the first half when coach Bob Huggins was using mostly backups. A late flurry gave WVU a 17-point lead at halftime.
At the beginning of the second half, the Mountaineers used a 14-4 run over the first five minutes to blow the game open.
Forwards Lamont West and Wesley Harris contributed 16 points each, while forward D'Angelo Hunter added 12.
Regulars Sagaba Konate (13 minutes), Daxter Miles Jr. (15 minutes) and Harris (17 minutes) saw abbreviated action.
Senior guard Jevon Carter played the second most minutes of any starter (23), but didn't attempt a shot and made only two free throws. He did hand out a team-best seven assists.
Backup guard James Bolden had to be helped to the locker room after apparently turning his ankle late in the second half attempting to make a cut away from the ball.
Wheeling, ranked 14th in this week's Division II rankings, got a game-high 22 points from 6-foot-7 senior forward Heywood Highsmith of Baltimore. Six-six junior forward Jeremiah Wilson of Chicago added 15.
West Virginia has non-conference games coming up Wednesday night against Coppin State and Saturday afternoon against Fordham before the Christmas break.
The Mountaineers (9-1) open Big 12 play at Oklahoma State on Friday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m. That contest will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
