MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A career day from junior guard Katrina Pardee led the way for the No. 10/11 West Virginia University women's basketball team as the Mountaineers cruised to a 101-43 win over visiting Coppin State on Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
WVU shot a blistering 64.3 percent from the field and dished out a season-high 27 assists as a team in the wire-to-wire victory, which helped West Virginia extend its nonconference home win streak to 37 games.
Nine different players scored for West Virginia in the win, including four players who finished in double figures. Pardee set a new career high with six 3-pointers and posted a career-best 25 points in the game.
"We formed a lot of bad habits instead of good habits," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "I hate these type of games, but we did what we had to do to get the win. It's good, we're in final exams now and all that. I can give them off a couple of days, and then get started back Wednesday, and then play in Charleston Saturday. We'll get back to action on Wednesday."
The Mountaineers (9-0) showed their dominance from the opening tip, scoring on nine of their first 10 possessions to start the game. Senior guard Chania Ray got WVU on the scoreboard first with a game-opening 3-pointer, before Pardee added another 3 moments later, giving the Mountaineers an early 6-2 advantage.
Following its first basket of the game, Coppin State (1-9) was held scoreless for over five minutes at one point in the first frame, leading to an 18-0 Mountaineer run. WVU made four shots from beyond the arc and saw all five starters score in the first 10 minutes en route to the team making nine of its first 15 attempts from the field.
The Mountaineers led, 28-9, after one quarter.
The streaky shooting continued in the second quarter, too. After scoring six of the period's first eight points, WVU made eight consecutive shots midway through the quarter, including three 3's by Pardee and a pair of buckets by senior forward Kristina King, to help the Mountaineers extend their lead to 49-20 with 3:50 to go in the half.
Pardee connected on a career-high six triples in the win, finishing with a career- and game-high 25 points.
Junior forward Naomi Davenport swished a 3-pointer at the 1:23 mark to put the Mountaineers in front by 30 at 54-24. WVU eventually took a 56-26 advantage into the locker room.
