Mountaineers Lead Cyclones at Halftime
November 04, 2017 05:21 PM | Football
An efficient Will Grier fired two touchdown passes and led two more drives that ended in Evan Staley field goals to help West Virginia to a 20-3 halftime lead over 14th-ranked Iowa State this afternoon.
Following the first subpar passing performance of the season last weekend against Oklahoma State, Grier completed 12 of his 13 first-half pass attempts for 233 yards and two touchdowns, one going to David Sills V for 10 yards and the other to Ka'Raun White for 55 yards.
Staley's two field goals covered distances of 36 and 42 yards. A third, after West Virginia drove from its 19 to the Iowa State 17 in 1:38, hooked outside the left upright from the 34 as time expired in the first half.
Iowa State's lone first-half score came on Garrett Owens' 42-yard field goal with 1:46 in the half and was mostly the result of West Virginia's generosity.
Two 15-yard penalties called on Al-Rasheed Benton and Kyzir White gave the Cyclones 30 yards and a first down at the WVU 40 on a third-and-11 play that was otherwise defended well.
West Virginia also rediscovered its ground game with Justin Crawford running 19 times for 83 yards and the Mountaineers doubling up their rushing total of a week ago in the first half.
The total yardage advantage at halftime is substantially in West Virginia's favor, 365-112.
West Virginia will kick off to Iowa State to begin the second half.
