WVU to Face Butler at Paradise Jam
November 22, 2017 02:29 PM | Women's Basketball
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The No. 11/13 West Virginia women's basketball team hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Melbourne, Florida, to take part in Paradise Jam from Nov. 23-25 at Eastern Florida State College. The Mountaineers (3-0) open play on Thursday with a noon tilt against Butler (3-1).
Brian Boesch and Ayana Dunning have the call on Jack-FM, 100.9, WVUsports.com and the WVU Gameday app. A live video stream will be provided at FloHoops for a fee.
Thursday will be the second all-time meeting between the Mountaineers and the Bulldogs. Butler, who enters the tournament at 3-1 overall, leads the series after claiming a 75-59 neutral-site victory in December of 1992.
Butler enters the tilt at 3-1, having just suffered its first defeat of the season at No. 16 South Florida by a score of 71-55. The Bulldogs previously beat Austin Peay (75-54), Murray State (88-59) and Lipscomb (70-58) to start the season. Tori Schickel and Whitney Jennings lead the team in scoring at 19.0 points per game. Schickel averages a double-double as she also paces the team on the boards with 11.5 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in blocks with eight on the season and steals at 4.0 steals per game. Butler is now in the BIG EAST, the former conference of the Mountaineers. After departing the conference in 2012, WVU is 150-172 all-time against league members.
"Butler played South Florida (on Monday), which is a very good basketball team," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "(They) had one bad quarter and got beat by 15. The first quarter, they were down one. The second quarter they got beat pretty good, the third quarter was tied and the fourth quarter was tied. They had one bad quarter, or that would have been a totally different game. They're much improved. They have a great point guard, a great center that had 20-something points and 17 rebounds. They have some players. They're much improved and a really good team."
West Virginia is coming off an 87-59 win over North Florida on Sunday behind career efforts from Katrina Pardee and Chania Ray. Pardee had a career-best 20 points and tied her career high with four 3-pointers. Ray lead the team in rebounding with 11, notching her first double-double of the season with 10 assists. She finished just a 3-pointer shy of a triple-double with seven points.
"Chania wasn't hitting her shot. But Chania's a total team player. She wasn't hitting her shot so she went and got 11 rebounds and 10 assists. She contributed to the team and really helped the team. That's what everybody's got to do. If you're not hitting your shot, you've still got to contribute to the team either by rebounding or taking charge at the other end of the floor."
Teana Muldrow led the team in scoring with 23.5 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game last week, earning her first-ever Big 12 Co-Player of the Week award. She also was named the College Sports Madness Big 12 Player of the Week.
After putting together a 3-0 record at home to start the season, WVU has moved to No. 11 in the AP Top 25 and was No. 13 in the most recent USA Today Sports Coaches Top 25.
Originally scheduled to be played in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, West Virginia and Virginia Tech will host the tournament in Florida following the devastation of Hurricane Irma. As part of the tournament, the Mountaineers will face Butler, Drexel and Virginia Tech. WVU will face Drexel on Friday. WVU is 0-1 against the Dragons all-time. However, the Mountaineers are 16-5 against CAA programs. A rivalry resumes on Saturday when the Mountaineers face the Virginia Tech Hokies for the first time since 2007. The two have met 16 prior times, starting in 1978. Tech leads the series 11-5 and is 3-0 in neutral site contests.
