WVU Trailing in a Defensive, Field Position Struggle
October 07, 2017 05:19 PM | Football
Adam Nunez's terrific punting has kept West Virginia's high-powered offense bottled up, and a special teams miscue led to the only touchdown of the first half to give TCU a 7-3 lead at the break.
TCU's score came early in the second quarter as a result of a muffed Marcus Simms' punt that was recovered by the Horned Frogs at the West Virginia 33.
A Kenny Hill 14-yard pass to Desmon White gave TCU a first down at the 19, and four plays later 235-pound running back Sewo Olonliua scored from the 3 to score the only touchdown of the first half.
West Virginia's score came during a 77-yard march that stalled at the TCU 16 after a holding penalty was called on center Matt Jones. Mike Molina was able to sneak his 37-yard kick inside the left upright to give the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead.
Molina later missed a 29-yard field goal attempt when the Mountaineers were stopped at the TCU 12.
WVU began its first-half drives at the 3, 5, 25, 1 and 5 against a Horned Frog defense that eventually tightened up against the run after Crawford gained 53 of his 66 yards on the game's opening drive.
Will Grier completed 12 of his 20 pass attempts for 142 yards but was sacked twice.
Hill was only good on 7 of his 15 first-half pass tries and the Horned Frogs finished the first half with 131 total yards.
