Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Goals from a pair of Mountaineer seniors pushed the No. 6-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over TCU this afternoon in its home regular-season finale at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Midfielder
Alli Magaletta tallied her second-game winner of the season in the 31st minute, and forward
Michaela Abam connected on a penalty kick in the 71st minute for the Mountaineers' (13-3-1, 6-1-1) 41st victory in Big 12 Conference play and seventh all-time win over the Horned Frogs (11-5-1, 5-2-1).
With today's result, WVU pushes its home unbeaten streak against conference foes to 39, the third-longest active streak nationally. The Mountaineers have not lost a conference match at Dick Dlesk Stadium since 2009.
"This was so important," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We got one (goal) against Texas Tech, but we didn't finish that game off. It was so important for this team to come out and finish them (TCU) off. How great, too, on Senior Day that
Alli Magaletta and
Michaela Abam got the two goals."
Magaletta's timely score gave the Mountaineers a first-half cushion. The WVU offense built the chance with several connected passes. Junior forward Sh'Nia Gordon earned a look wide of the penalty line that Emily Alvarado, playing in relief of an injured Katie Lund, batted away at the far-right post, handing WVU its fourth corner kick of the match. Junior defender
Bianca St. Georges played the ball into the box, and Magaletta connected with a header to the far-right post.
The score was the Chesterfield, Missouri, native's third of the year and the sixth of her career; all but one of her career scores has been a game-winner. St. Georges now ranks second on the team with five helpers.
Fighting through fouls all match, Abam added the second-half insurance goal off her third penalty kick of the season. The Houston native was pulled down near the six-yard box before stepping up to the line for her team-best sixth goal of the year.
Abam continues to pace the team with 15 points (6 G, 3 A). The score was her 38th career goal, and she moves into a tie with Frances Silva (2010-13) for fourth place in the Mountaineer record book. Abam's career point total moves to 92 (38 G, 16 A), and she continues to rank No. 6 all-time.
The Mountaineer backline negated a Horned Frog attack which entered the match ranked No. 2 in the Big 12 with a 1.75 goals/game average, allowing TCU just three shots, none of which were on-frame. The Horned Frogs are the fifth team and second Big 12 squad to not place a shot on-goal.
"We knew they were very dynamic, and they definitely played inside that midfield very well with their passes," Izzo-Brown added. "I have to credit our midfield and the way they kept things tight and closed off any kind of passing angles. That's a very good TCU team we just beat, and I was proud of the way the girls came out and handled them."
Sophomore
Rylee Foster played all 90 minutes between the posts. The clean sheet is her ninth and the team's 10th of the year.
WVU finished with a 16-3 edge in shots and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Mountaineers outplayed the Horned Frogs in the first half, forcing goalkeepers Lund and Alvarado into a combined three saves.
After just entering the match, Alvarado denied Abam an early goal in the 29th minute, pushing a long, high shot away at the crossbar.
TCU's first chance of the match came in the 43rd minute, as midfielder Yazmeen Ryan earned a low shot from 20-yards out, but the attempt went wide left.
WVU opened the second half with a focused offensive push, and the effort nearly resulted in a goal in the 51st minute. Off the team's sixth corner kick, senior midfielder
Carla Portillo pounced on the ball and sent it into box. Senior forward
Heather Kaleiohi quickly flicked it right to junior defender
Vanessa Flores, but Alvarado halted the play at the right post.
Alvarado denied the Mountaineers a third goal in the 74th minute, stopping Flores' close-range shot at the top of the goal box. The rebound bounced out to Portillo. Her shot was blocked away for the team's ninth corner kick.
Abam paced the field with five shots. She and Magaletta each finished with a game-high two shots on-goal.
With the win, WVU improves to 7-1-1 all-time against TCU.
The Mountaineers move to second place in the Big 12 Conference standings with 19 points. Oklahoma State sits at first place with 21 points. Both teams conclude their regular-season schedules on Oct. 27, as the Mountaineers kick at Kansas and the Cowgirls play at No. 10 Texas. The matches will begin at 8 p.m. ET.
