Mountaineers Edged in OT in Top-15 Showdown
October 20, 2017 10:22 PM | Men's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In a battle of top-15 teams at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, the No. 15 West Virginia University men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 8 Western Michigan in overtime on Friday night.
The Mountaineers (7-4-4, 0-1-2 Mid-American Conference) played right with the eighth-ranked Broncos (13-2-1, 3-0-0 MAC) for more than 90 minutes before a foul was called on WVU just outside the box. On the ensuing free kick, WMU scored the game's only goal in the 96th minute.
"There's no solace in how we battled," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "We lost the game, and it was a game we didn't deserve to lose. We played them off the bark for most of the game and our lack of ability to finish on the attacking third is what cost us the game. They get one chance on a deflection and it goes in. I thought we were the better team on the night, but you have to give them credit because they grinded and they found a way to get the result."
West Virginia and Western Michigan both had five shots and two shots on goal in the contest. Freshman keeper Steven Tekesky made one save for WVU, while Drew Shepherd had two stops for the visitors. The Mountaineers held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The game-winning goal came at 95:35 off a free kick on the near side of the top of the box. Anthony Bowie took the free kick from 25 yards out and made the short pass to Brandon Bye, who scored into the lower left corner of the net. The goal came off a deflection and was his 11th of the season.
The Broncos had the game's first chance off a free kick in the seventh minute. The chance came from just inside the corner of the 18, and went right to Tekesky, who made the save.
Senior Steven James had a chance for the Mountaineers in the 13th minute off a free kick from sophomore Ryan Kellogg. However, James' header from the edge of the six went high.
Western Michigan had a breakaway opportunity in the 27th minute, but the Mountaineer defense did a great job of preventing a good chance for the visitors. At the edge of the box, Kellogg had a great tackle to halt the breakaway. The ball was then sent to a Bronco attacker on the far side, but his quick shot from inside the 18 went wide.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the half, sophomore Pascal Derwaritsch sent a long shot in wide, and sophomore Ethan Shim followed with a shot in the final three minutes from the edge of the box, but Shepherd made the easy save.
The Mountaineers' first corner kick of the second half came in the 57th minute. However, a hard foul on the ball into the box resulted in a yellow card shown to Derwaritsch.
WMU had a chance six minutes later, but the WVU defense blocked the shot from 20 yards out to prevent a ball on net.
The visitors had more chances in the final 10 minutes. On a pair of crosses into the box, Tekesky made stops on both occasions to prevent the Broncos from getting a chance on net.
Freshman Brendan Hogan closed out regulation with a shot in the final minute that went high.
In overtime, neither team had a shot before Western Michigan's goal.
