Mountaineers in the Pros: Week 17

In this week’s report, Keith Tandy had two interceptions and a team-best 12 tackles in a win for Tampa Bay, while Bruce Irvin forced a fumble and had five tackles for Oakland. Nine Mountaineers are postseason bound: Don Barclay (Green Bay), KJ Dillon (Houston)*, Mark Glowinski (Seattle), Bruce Irvin (Oakland), Will Johnson (New York Giants)*, Karl Joseph (Oakland), Shaq Riddick (Pittsburgh)^, Dreamius Smith (Pittsburgh)^ and J.T. Thomas (New York Giants)*. Additionally, Pat McAfee has made the Pro Bowl and will serve as the starting punter for the AFC.

Mario Alford returned three punts and two kickoffs in Cleveland’s 27-24 loss at Pittsburgh on Sunday. Alford averaged 30.0 yards per kick return and 8.7 yards per punt return. The loss concludes Cleveland’s (1-15) season.

Tavon Austin started at wide receiver in the Rams’ 44-6 season-ending loss to Arizona on Sunday. Austin had two receptions for 18 yards while adding two carries for two yards and returning three punts for 18 yards. The loss concluded Los Angeles’ (4-12) season.

Next Game: Sunday, Jan. 8 – vs. New York Giants – 4:40 p.m. ET
Don Barclay played seven snaps in Green Bay’s 31-24 win at Detroit on Sunday. Green Bay (10-6) hosts the New York Giants (11-5) on Sunday in the Wild Card round.
Will Clarke played 30 snaps and had one pass breakup in Cincinnati’s 27-10 win against Baltimore on Sunday. The win concludes the Bengals’ (6-9-1) season
Next Game: Injured Reserve
Rookie KJ Dillon was placed on injured reserve after suffering an injury against Indianapolis on Monday, Oct. 17. Although Dillion may have been sidelined, he and his teammates helped 14 needy children by picking out clothing and toys in a shopping spree. Dillon’s Texans (9-7) host Oakland (12-4) in Saturday’s Wild Card game.

Terence Garvin had two special teams tackles and played 23 snaps in Washington’s 19-10 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. The loss concluded the Redskins’ (8-7-1) season.

Mark Glowinski started at left guard and played all 64 offensive snaps in Seattle’s 25-23 win at San Francisco on Sunday. The Seahawks (10-5-1) host the Lions (9-7) in a Wild Card contest on Saturday.
Najee Goode recovered a blocked punt and recorded a special teams tackle while playing 19 snaps on special teams in the Eagles’ 27-13 win over the Cowboys on Sunday. The win wrapped up Philadelphia’s (7-9) season.

Bruce Irvin started at linebacker and forced a fumble and recorded five tackles in Oakland’s 24-6 loss at Denver on Sunday. One of Irvin’s tackles was for a loss of four yards. The Raiders (12-4) travel to Houston (9-7) on Sunday for a Wild Card matchup.

Next Game: Injured Reserve
Will Johnson signed a free agent contract with the New York Giants in April. Johnson had played in 47 straight games in the regular season with the Steelers, which was the third-longest active streak among NFL fullbacks. However, he suffered an injury early in the preseason and was placed on the Giants injured reserve list. The Giants (11-5) travel to Green Bay (10-6) for the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

Starting at cornerback, Adam Jones had six tackles and returned a punt 15 yards in the Bengals’ 27-10 win over the Ravens on Sunday. The win wrapped up the season for Jones and Cincinnati (6-9-1).

Karl Joseph has been inactive the last four weeks due to injury. The rookie suffered a toe injury in the first half of the Buffalo game on Dec. 4. His status is unknown at this time as the Raiders (12-4) prepare to travel to Houston (9-7) on Sunday for a Wild Card matchup.

Rookie Nick Kwiatkoski started at inside linebacker for the Bears (3-13) in their season finale at Minnesota. In the 38-10 loss, Kwiatkoski was third on the team with four tackles.

Pat McAfee averaged 50.8 yards per punt in four attempts in Indianapolis’ 24-20 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. The Colts’ (8-8) season has concluded, but McAfee will compete for the AFC in the Pro Bowl.

Next Game: Practice Squad
Shaq Riddick was signed to Pittsburgh’s practice squad on Dec. 13. He was originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He was released by Arizona on Sept. 27. Pittsburgh (11-5) hosts Miami (10-6) in a Wild Card matchup on Sunday.
Charles Sims did not play in Tampa Bay’s (9-7) season finale, a 17-16 victory over Carolina.

Wendell Smallwood carried the ball three times for three yards and returned a kickoff for 27 yards before leaving the Dec. 11 game against Washington in the second quarter. Smallwood suffered a season-ending knee injury and was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 16. The Eagles’ (7-9) season concluded on Sunday with a 27-13 win over the Cowboys.

Dreamius Smith was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad on Nov. 28. Smith signed an undrafted free agent contract with the San Diego Chargers last season. He was placed on injured reserve on August 30 and released two days later. Smith appeared in two games with the Chargers in 2015. Pittsburgh (11-5) hosts the Dolphins (10-6) in the Wild Card game on Sunday.

Geno Smith started his first game of the season and completed 4-of-8 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown before suffering a torn ACL against Baltimore on Oct. 23. Smith was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 26. The Jets (5-11) wrapped up their season with a 30-10 win over the Bills on Sunday.

J.T. Thomas played 11 snaps on special teams before suffering a knee injury in New York’s 20-19 season-opening loss at Dallas. Subsequently, the Giants placed Thomas on injured reserve on Monday, Sept. 12. Thomas’ Giants (11-5) travel to Green Bay (10-6) for the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

Kevin White caught 19 passes for 187 yards in four games before suffering an injury against Detroit on Oct. 2. White was placed on the injured reserve following the game. He had surgery on his fractured fibula. White did not return during the season. The Bears (3-13) wrapped up their season with a 38-10 loss at Minnesota on Sunday.

Daryl Worley started at cornerback and had three tackles and a pass deflection while playing all 63 defensive snaps in Carolina’s 17-16 loss at Tampa Bay on Sunday. The loss marked the end of the season for Worley and the Panthers (6-10).
