Mountaineers in the Pros Update – April 20

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With the third week of the Major League Baseball season is underway, 14 former West Virginia University baseball players are on active rosters. Jedd Gyorko is representing the Mountaineers in the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals, while nine players are in the minor leagues. Another two are in extended spring training, one is in the Independent League and another, Dustin Nippert, is playing in the Korean Baseball Organization.
Bobby Boyd – Lancaster JetHawks (Advanced-A, Houston Astros)
Bobby Boyd has made eight appearances, six in the outfield, for the Lancaster JetHawks. He recorded a season-high two hits and scored two runs twice to begin the year, on April 11 and again on April 19. Boyd leads the JetHawks with 38 plate appearances and 7 runs scored and currently has a batting average of .316 with three RBI’s and one double.
Sean Carley – Extended Spring Training, New York Yankees
Sean Carley is currently in extended spring training with the New York Yankees.
Billy Fleming – Trenton Thunder (Double-A, New York Yankees)
Billy Fleming is off to a hot start, hitting an impressive .429 through 11 games with 42 at-bats. He has recorded 18 hits while driving three runs. Fleming reordered a season-high three hits twice this year. His versatility in the field has come in handy for the Trenton Thunder, as he has played at the first, second and third as well as appearing as the designated hitter once.
Justin Fox – Washington Wild Things (Independent)

Jedd Gyorko – St. Louis Cardinals (MLB)
Jedd Gyorko is in his fourth MLB season, spending the first three with the San Diego Padres before being traded in the offseason to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Opening Day starter at shortstop for the Cardinals, he has played in ten games in 2016 with seven starts. Gyorko had a season-high two hits, with a home run and two RBIs on April 5 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the 2016 season, Gyorko is hitting .185 with five hits, two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Garrett Hope – Extended Spring Training, Los Angeles Dodgers
Garrett Hope is currently in extended spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ryan McBroom – Dunedin Blue Jays (Advanced-A, Toronto Blue Jays)
Ryan McBroom has appeared in 13 games for the Dunedin Blue Jays, all at first base. Hitting .259 with 14 hits, four RBIs, two home runs and seven runs scored, McBroom has recorded two multi-hit games.
John Means – Frederick Keys (Advanced-A, Baltimore Orioles)
John Means owns a 2-0 record for the Frederick Keys with three starts. With a 2.57 ERA, he leads the Keys in wins and innings pitched, with 14.0. In his third professional season, Means has struck out nine batters and allowed just four earned runs on 12 hits.
Taylor Munden – Greensboro Grasshoppers (Single-A, Miami Marlins)
In his second professional season, Taylor Munden has appeared in ten games for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Starting six games at third base and four at second, he has been solid defensively, with no errors. Munden hit his first double of a season and scored a run on April 19. Munden has an average of .083 with three hits and three runs scored on the year.
Harrison Musgrave – Hartford Yard Goats (Double-A, Colorado Rockies)
Harrison Musgrave opened the 2016 season by picking up the win against the Portland Sea Dogs on April 16. In 7.0 innings, he allowed two hits and struck out two in his only start of the season. Musgrave owns a record of 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA with 2 strikeouts in 2016.
Dustin Nippert – Doosan Bears (Korean Baseball Organization)
After playing parts of six seasons in the major leagues, Dustin Nippert begins his sixth season with the Doosan Bears in the Korean Baseball Organization. He has started three games and owns a perfect 3-0 record with a 2.45 ERA. In 18.1 innings, he has struck out 26 and allowed 15 hits and five earned runs.
Cam O’Brien – GCL Blue Jays (Rookie League, Toronto Blue Jays)
Cam O’Brien and the GCL Blue Jays open play in the Gulf Coast League in June.
John Polonius – Augusta GreenJackets (Single-A, San Francisco Giants)
John Polonius is in his fifth professional season and has not seen action in 2016 for the Augusta GreenJackets. He is currently on the seven-day disabled list.
Corey Walter – Midland RockHounds (Double-A, Oakland Athletics)
Corey Walter has pitched 7.1 innings in four appearances. He owns an ERA of 2.45 with nine strikeouts and two walks. Walter has allowed just two runs this season, with all four appearances coming in relief.
