MORGANTOWN, W.Va.  – After downing a top-10 opponent this weekend, West Virginia University’s Jacob A. Smith has been named the Big 12 Co-Wrestler of the Week for the third week of the season, as announced by the league on Monday.

 

It marks the third time in his career Smith has earned a Big 12 weekly awards. He shares the honor with Jacobe Smith of Oklahoma State.

 

Ranked No. 9/10 at 197 pounds, Smith earned a 2-0 decision over No. 6 Aaron Studebaker in the Mountaineers’ dual at No. 7 Nebraska on Friday. The two previously met in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Championships, with Studebaker taking the win.

 

“I’m so proud of our men and their effort to raise the bar each week,” WVU coach Sammie Henson said. “Jake’s performance progress he belongs with the elite in the country.”

 

After a scoreless first period, Smith chose the defensive positon to start the second and used an escape for a 1-0 lead. Starting the third period on top, Smith rode Studebaker through the period to take the riding time point for the 2-0 decision.

 

West Virginia travels to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas from Dec. 2-3.
