WVU Digs Big First Half Hole
November 19, 2016 10:01 PM | Football
West Virginia’s defense forced Oklahoma to punt on the game’s opening possession, Gary Jennings fumbled, and six plays later the Sooners visited West Virginia’s end zone for the first of five times in the first half as OU built a 34-7 lead.
It was all-around bad for the Mountaineers, West Virginia turning the ball over three times - twice in the red zone - committing six penalties for 80 yards and giving up two length-of-the field scoring drives of 96 and 97 yards late in the second quarter.
Samaje Perine scored twice and Joe Mixon once on the ground, Dede Westbrook took a screen pass and raced 75 yards for a touchdown and Jeffery Mead grabbed a 5-yard scoring toss from Baker Mayfield.
West Virginia’s lone score came late in the second quarter when Skyler Howard found Jovon Durante in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown.
OU produced 241 yards rushing and 116 yards passing, while the Mountaineers got most of their 259 yards on the ground - 178 of those coming from Justin Crawford.
