Countdown to Kickoff

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia draws the curtain for 20 seniors playing their final game at Milan Puskar Stadium Saturday afternoon against Iowa State.
Seniors participating in their final home game today include Darren Arndt (TE), Jared Barber (LB), Isaiah Bruce (LB), Terrell Chestnut (CB), Cody Clay (TE), John DePalma (LSD), KJ Dillon (S0, Karl Joseph 9S), Eric Kinsey (DL), Nick Kwiatkoski (LB), Marquis Lucas (OL), Edward Muldrow III (LB), KJ Myers (WR), Nick O’Toole (P), Shaq Petteway (LB), Kyle Rose (DL), Rick Rumph III (CB), Jordan Thompson (WR), Stone Underwood (OL) and Dayron Wilson (S).
This year’s senior class became bowl-eligible for the third time in four years following last Saturday’s 49-0 victory at Kansas.
Kickoff for today’s game is set for noon and the contest will be televised nationally on FSN1. The Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG’s pregame coverage begins with the Mountaineer Tailgate Show at 8:30 a.m. leading into game coverage at 112 p.m. on stations throughout West Virginia and online via leanStream and the mobile app TuneIn.
Here is today’s Countdown to Kickoff, presented by the Friends of Coal:
10 – TEN different Mountaineer players have produced sacks so far this year, including Noble Nwachukwu’s team-leading 8½ sacks. Five different players have multiple sacks.
9 – Shelton Gibson’s NINE kickoff returns this year have gone for 272 yards, including a 100-yard return for a touchdown at Baylor earlier this season.
8 – Mike Molina’s EIGHT kickoffs this year have traveled a distance of 510 yards, or an average of 63.8 yards per kickoff. Three of those kickoffs were not returned.
7 – Running back Rushel Shell is now second on the team with SEVEN rushing touchdowns, including his two scored last Saturday at Kansas. Shell has reached the end zone a team-best 14 times over the last two years on the ground.
6 – Senior wide receiver Jordan Thompson led the team with SIX catches for 68 yards in last week’s 49-0 victory at Kansas. Thompson is now third on the team with 22 catches for 290 yards.
5 – FIVE of Josh Lambert’s 12 made field goal this year have been from a distance of 30 yards or longer, including a season-best 51 yarder against Maryland.
4 – Running back Wendell Smallwood had his FOURTH straight 100-yard rushing performance last Saturday at Kansas with 115 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Smallwood now has seven 100-yard games this season and leads the team with 1,234 yards.
3 – West Virginia’s defense is ranked THIRD in the country in interceptions this week with 19. The Mountaineers picked off three passes last Saturday at Kansas.
2 – Senior tight end Cody Clay’s TWO receptions this year have gone for touchdowns, including last Saturday’s two-yard pass from Skyler Howard.
1 – West Virginia produced its FIRST shutout in Big 12 play last Saturday at Kansas, a 49-0 Mountaineer victory. The Jayhawks could manage just 221 yards of total offense and 10 first downs against a stingy WVU defense.
